It’s been revealed there is a new Willow TV series coming to Disney Plus and it’ll be directed by Crazy Rich Asians director, Jon M. Chu.
It was rumoured back in May that Disney might be working on a new Willow movie or TV series.
Ron Howard directed the original movie back in 1988 and George Lucas produced it.
The film starred Star Wars: Return of the Jedi’s Warwick Davis and the titular Willow.
Davis has been talking about a Willow comeback for years, and it seems as though he’s now got his wish.
It was also rumoured that Ron Howard would only return to the project if Davis and Jonathan Kasdan were also involved in the project.
It’s now been officially revealed (via Collider) that Willow is happening as a TV series on Disney Plus.
However, that’s not all. This Willow TV series will also be directed and produced by Crazy Rich Asians’ director, Jon M. Chu.
He is currently working on the upcoming adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights.

If you still haven’t seen the original Willow movie, it’s currently available to watch in Disney Plus right now.
As for the new series, not much is know about the plot.
However, we do know that the pilot episode is being written by Jonathan Kasdan.
Davis is also confirmed for the lead role.
Here’s an official statement made by Chu regarding the new Willow TV series:
Growing up in the ’80s, ‘Willow’ has had a profound effect on me. The story of the bravest heroes in the least likely places allowed me, an Asian-American kid growing up in a Chinese restaurant looking to go to Hollywood, to believe in the power of our own will, determination and of course, inner magic. So the fact that I get to work with my heroes from Kathleen Kennedy to Ron Howard is bigger than a dream-come-true. It’s a bucket-list moment for me. Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle have added such groundbreaking new characters and delightful surprises to this timeless story that I can’t wait for the world to come along on this epic journey with us.
Howard will be returning as an executive producer, alongside original screenwriter Bob Dolman, who will be a consulting producer.
Here’s what Howard said in an official statement:
It’s creatively exciting to not only revisit the world and characters first conceived by George Lucas, Bob Dolman and myself but to see it take flight in such fresh, fun and cinematic ways through the imagination of Jon Kasdan and Team Willow. This isn’t a nostalgic throw-back, it’s a creative lean-forward and it’s a blast to be a part of it all.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy went on to suggest that there’s more non-Star Wars-related storytelling on the way:
This is an exciting new era for storytelling at Lucasfilm. Jon Chu’s vision, coupled with the writing of Jon Kasdan and Wendy Mericle, is going to take Willow into new and exciting directions for the series. Reuniting Ron Howard and Warwick Davis in the world of ‘Willow’ is something that they’ve both wanted to do for some time, and I couldn’t be more proud of the incredible team we’ve put together to bring this series to Disney+.
