It’s been revealed that Will Smith was asked to leave the ceremony by the Academy after he slapped Chris Rock, but the actor refused.
This news comes to us via The New York Times.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed that Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars ceremony after he slapped Chris Rock onstage.
However, the King Richard actor refused to leave.
“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the academy said in a statement announcing that it had initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith.
The statement continued: “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
Interestingly enough, Chris Rock’s upcoming stand-up tour has since sold out, which is great for him!

He used his first public appearance in Boston to make his first statement about the incident.
Chris Rock asked the crowd in Boston: How was your weekend?”
He then added: “I’m still kind of processing what happened.”
The comedian and actor then said that he would discuss what happened in greater depth at a later date.
He said: “It’ll be serious, it’ll be funny, but I’d love to — I’m going to tell some jokes.”
