It looks like James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is getting another spinoff as Deadline is reporting Viola Davis is in talks to star in a Peacemaker spinoff for HBO Max.
Does this make it a spinoff of a spinoff of a movie?
Down the rabbit hole we go.
Regardless, this is interesting news and bodes well for Gunn’s planned projects in the DC Universe. Plus, the combination of Viola Davis and television is always a hit.
Back in August of last year, James Gunn hinted he was working on another project at DC and then maybe one more. Then earlier this year he confirmed he was developing a spinoff and as he told Deadline it was “connected to the universe… (but) won’t be as much of a comedy as the Peacemaker series”.
Later on, he responded to a fans question about the spinoffs:
Frankly, I’m working on another DC thing, and maybe another one.

James Gunn will executive produce the project. Christal Henry (writer of the excellent Watchmen series) will write and executive produce, while Peacemaker and Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran joins as executive producer.
Viola Davis is in talks to star and executive produce the Peacemaker spinoff.
This is not surprising since the Warner Bros/Discovery merger has the studio looking at potential money makers to develop that existed in the early stages. Peacemaker’s finale was the biggest single day audience for HBO Max to date. Whether you liked the series or not (we did), and whether you had problems with the cameos at the end (I thought it was a great way to tie the universes together), you can’t deny that it’s been a successful franchise for the streaming service.
Still, there’s room in the DC multiverse for all these franchises. Don’t worry.
Warner Bros TV is handling the spinoff and it will be interesting to see how dark they take this series, with Christal Henry on board as head writer and James Gunn admitting it won’t be as much of a comedy as Peacemaker.
Davis is well known for her lead role in How To Get Away With Murder and she recently just played Michelle Obama in Showtime’s The First Lady.
