Trevor Slattery is going to be coming back to the MCU… again! It’s being reported that Sir Ben Kingsley will be returning as his Marvel Cinematic Universe character in the upcoming Disney Plus series, Wonder Man. This report comes to us via Variety, and I actually like this news. Let me explain why.
I might be one of the very few people that really enjoys Sir Ben Kingsley’s performances as the down-and-outer actor who was hired to play a version of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. I genuinely thought he was perfect in the role and I really loved the twist at the end of Iron Man 3. I’m sure you all know by now the twist I’m referring to. It was the moment when it was revealed that the person we all thought was the real Mandarin was actually just an actor from Liverpool called Trevor. Brilliant if you ask me.

We then saw the character again in Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. I thought he was great in that movie too. The whole reason he was there was because he was kidnapped by the real Mandarin, and he was keeping him around as a sort of court jester. I liked that plotline, but many viewers didn’t like seeing him back in the MCU. Honestly, I really don’t get people’s dislike of the character.
People seemed to be really upset by the fact that he wasn’t the real Mandarin in Iron Man 3. However, there was always an issue with the character from the comic books. The villain was a racial stereotype, and I completely understand why Marvel Studios wanted to switch things up when coming up with the movie’s plot. However, then Shang-Chi was made, and people said that they just brought the character back to its comic book routes, but really, they didn’t.
The Mandarin was a problematic character

The way The Mandarin was depicted in the comic books was, let’s face it, a bit racist. Well, maybe not racist as such, but perhaps, a little bit naive. He was an old Asian man with a long beard and had powers granted to him by his ten rings. They updated the character, in my opinion, very well in Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. However, when coming up with the villain for Iron Man 3, the writers and writer/director, Shane Black, wanted to do something different with the character, and I genuinely think that what they did worked.
That’s just me, and I know that people will disagree with me on that one, but I stand by that movie, and I think Trevor Slattery is a good addition to the MCU. I also think that Wonder Man is going to be a very interesting show with Sir Ben Kinglsey involved. The series is being developed by Marvel Studios for Disney Plus, and Cretton is a producer and one of the creators of the show.
Wonder Man sounds very interesting

It’ll be centred on the character Simon Williams (also known as Wonder Man), with Andrew Guest joining to develop the series along with serving as head writer. Cretton was also expected to direct episodes of the series. Filming is expected to begin as early as 2023.
