Tom Cruise is back as Captain Peter “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick and the very first trailer is here for us to feast our eyes on.
The very first Top Gun, made by the late and great director, Tony Scott, was one of best things to come out the 80s if you ask me. I love the film, and I rewatch it quite a lot.
It even spawned a pretty good spoof movie in the first Hot Shots! film, which I loved as a kid.
When I heard that Top Gun was going to get a sequel, I wasn’t so sure it was a good idea. Tom Cruise is doing perfectly fine with the Mission: Impossible movies, and I wasn’t sure there was burning need to know what happened to Maverick after the events of the first film.
However, upon seeing the new trailer, which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, my mind was changed. It looks so good.
The planes, the incredible shots, the music, the sunsets, Tom Cruise in a fighter jet, Tom Cruise on a motorbike, Tom Cruise as Maverick again. It just all feels very right.
This film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski who’s previous credits include Tron: Legacy, Oblivion and Only The Brave, and there’s some very good stuff there.
The first thing I’ll say is that those films all look stunning, especially Oblivion. The second reason why I have faith in this movie is Christopher McQuarrie’s involvement with the script.
McQuarrie’s a brilliant writer and his work with Cruise has been pretty good over the years, culminating in the masterpiece that is Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
So, personally, I’m no longer that worried about Top Gun: Maverick, and I’m actually really looking forward to watching it.
Meanwhile, why not have a read of our articles on the five reasons why Tom Holland in the best Spider-Man ever, the five actors who could play The Penguin in the movie, and the five movies you should watch if you still think Robert Pattinson won’t be a good Batman.
You can also have a read of our reviews of Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Aladdin, Detective Pikachu, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Avengers: Endgame, Hellboy and Glass.
In the meantime, why not catch up on your Marvel movie knowledge by hopefully re-watching some of the films in the franchise, which you can purchase here!
Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit UK cinemas on July 17th, 2020. Are you going to see it?
