Top Gun star Tom Cruise is reportedly working on a sequel to Joseph Kosinski’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi film Oblivion. Kosinski made the Oblivion comic for Radical Comics; unfortunately, this was never released. But instead, it was given new life into a theatrical release. The film starred Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.
The film tells the story of Jack Harper (Cruise), also known as Tech 49. He is a technician that repairs drones with Victoria (Riseborough) as his communication partner. Jack dreams of a past he can’t remember. Everything changes when he discovers a woman who survives a crash from space.
Oblivion didn’t really break the box office, but it was enough to earn a profit. But not enough to warrant a sequel. So, a sequel wasn’t something many would have been expecting. Nor was this a highly rated film, as it rests at 54% based on critic reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. Even the audience score wasn’t high either, as it’s at 61%.
Regardless, there are fans of the film. I, for one, enjoyed it myself. I love the design; I find the world interesting. I wonder what would happen to all the Jack and Victoria clones in the world. But I really didn’t expect that there would be a sequel.

Giant Freakin Robot reports that Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise is returning to make Oblivion 2 with original director Joseph Kosinski. The plot so far is set 15 years after the events of the first film. The Tet AI has repaired itself and is set to conquer the Earth. Jack, Julia and their daughter fight back against the alien.
So far, no one else has been confirmed to return yet. But it’s not impossible to see that they’ll try to talk Olga Kurylenko to return to play Julia. Kurylenko is known in the MCU as Antonia Dreykov or the Taskmaster. She is set to reprise her role in the Marvel Universe in Thunderbolts, directed by Jake Schreier. She also stars in the Netflix series Treason with Charlie Cox.
Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri played the role of Julia’s daughter. She hasn’t really done any acting since. But did sing in her mother’s (Katie Holmes) most recent film, Alone Together (2022). It’s presumed that she’ll be recast.
Joseph Kosinski directed Top Gun: Maverick, which is one of the most successful films of 2022. The Top Gun sequel has earned a whopping $1.493 billion. He is also known to have directed Tron: Legacy and Netflix’s Spiderhead.

No other details about the project are available as of yet. Considering that the movie didn’t really break the bank at the box office, I doubt that Universal would be enthusiastic about making the film. But Kosinski did break the bank with Top Gun: Maverick, and with Tom Cruise to back him up, there might be something there that Universal is willing to green-light the project.
For sure, this is a passion project for Kosinski. It’s his creation; it’s his world. He was given a chance to make it, and to get a chance to even continue it is a dream.
Will we actually get to see the Tet this time? All we ever saw in the film was an AI which only imitated the mission director named Sally. Or will we see Jack fighting an army of Jack and Victoria clones? I am curious about what will happen in Kosinski’s Oblivion sequel.
