Taika Waititi has explained how that hilarious Matt Damon cameo came to be in Thor: Ragnarok. CAUTION: SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok.
WARNING: SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok coming up.
I will say this only once more; if you haven’t seen Thor: Ragnarok yet and don’t like spoilers, then you should go watch the movie and come back and read this article. Right, now that we got all those warning out of the way, we can start getting on with the good stuff. If you’ve seen Thor: Ragnarok then you would have been delighted to see Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth’s wonderfully hilarious cameo appearances. They appear together during a scene on Asgard in which they play two actors who are retelling the story of Loki’s death in a special play put on by Odin, King of Asgard (or is he…).
During an interview with GamesRadar, Taika Waititi explained how that scene came about. “When that particular scene was written they weren’t supposed to be cameos,” reveals Watiti. “We filmed it and then we realized it might be funnier if we make it more of an in-joke, where the stars of this play were stars on earth. I particularly love that scene because those are some of my favourite people and they’re all in this ridiculous theatre. It just makes me happy.”
As I mentioned in my review of Thor: Ragnarok, this is easily one of Marvel’s funniest films to date and a lot of that is down to Waititi’s direction. Incorporating gags like Matt Damon and Luke Hemsworth’s cameos just added to the film’s hilarity. It was wonderful watching that scene and seeing the audience slowly realise who the actors playing Thor and Loki really were. The fact that they got Luke, Chris’ older brother, to play Thor is that scene was a stroke of genius and a real deep cut.
