The Sandman Season 2 hasn’t officially been greenlit by Netflix, but its creator, Neil Gaiman, has dropped some details of their plans for Season 2. He spoke about the show’s potential second season during an interview on The Happy, Sad, Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, and he had quite a bit to say about what could happen in another season of the hit Netflix series.
So, Josh asked Neil about the second season, and in particular the casting of a pretty popular character from the comic books, Orpheus – who’s Dream and Calliope’s child in the comics. This was when Neil started talking at length about a second season, and even though he didn’t quite confirm that it was happening, he did make clear that it was in the works since he confirmed that they were writing scripts and casting actors for a second season.

Here’s what Neil Gaiman had to say about the show’s second season:
It is the worst thing about knowing that we have season two coming up because I’ll go to the theatre, and I’ll go ‘Oh’, looking up their biography. Send a little text to Allan Heinberg. ‘What about so-and-so for such-and-such part?’. Get a thing back saying ‘noted’.
This was in reference to the fact that they’ve already basically cast Orpheus for Season 2 of the show, but the actor still doesn’t know yet. Gaiman was then asked how much of a part Orpheus would play in the second season of the series. Here’s what he had to say:
No. I mean basically. Honestly, the answer to everything is ‘It’s an awful lot like the comics’. Just like in season one. The answer is, we don’t always take exactly the same route to get to the same place we did in the comics. Sometimes, you may get a little more than you were expecting.

Gaiman then continued to talk about The Sandman Season 2. Here’s what he had to say:
Honestly, as long as Netflix are good with us, writing us the check to keep going, we will keep going and well will continue to reinvent the ways that we’re doing things. I’m really excited about some of the stuff that we planned for season two. We have, I mean, we really have planned how we’re going to do season two. And it’s an awful lot of fun because we’re taking some of the short stories and building them into the body of the main thing. And we’re taking… we’ve got ways of flowing from one storyline into the next storyline that we didn’t necessarily have. So, it’s built, and it’s shaped, and it’s constructed.
The author then went on to talk about the possibility of using animation again, just like they did in the surprise additional episode of Season 1. Here’s what he had to say on that matter:
We’re already talking about things like, places that you could use different kinds of animation. Would we want to use animation again? It’s really expensive. I mean, it cost us a lot of money for that sixteen minutes. People are coming to me and saying, “Woah! Could you do the whole thing animated?’ And it’s like, ‘Yes, I could!’ If somebody wanted to give half a billion dollars, we could absolutely do the whole thing animated!
