After years of speculation, it appears that a new Alien movie has entered principal photography. What do I mean by this? I mean that the movie has started filming, which is terrific news because we cannot wait to watch this movie!
After Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, one of the many franchises the House Of Mouse ended up owning was the Alien franchise, which is a pretty good one to own if you ask me. They also own the Predator franchise, and we recently saw the newest movie in that franchise, Prey, which landed on Hulu in the United States (Disney Plus everywhere else), and it was bloody incredible!
However, one thing this acquisition did was put to bed people’s hopes of seeing Sir Ridley Scott returning to complete his prequel trilogy, which started with Prometheus and was then followed up with Alien: Covenant. Those movies weren’t terribly well-received by audiences and critics. That said, I think they were okay movies, just not as good as people were hoping they would be.
Since taking over 20th Century Fox, Disney has been hard at work with this Alien franchise. It was announced that FX/Disney Plus was making a new Alien series, which is currently being developed by Noah Hawley, who’s writing and producing the show.

The show is also being produced by Ridley Scott, and this new series is something that I am very, very interested in watching. However, it was also announced that there was a new Alien movie in development over at Disney. The movie was reported to be unconnected to Scott’s prequel movies and is going to be directed by Fede Álvarez.
The director is well known after directing Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe and should bring a fresh and terrifying take on the series. According to Production List, this new Xenomorph movie started filming on the 6th of February in Budapest, Hungary, at Origio Studios.
The movie has a working title of Alien: Romulus.
Quite a few recent sci-fi movies have been shot in Budapest. The likes of Blade Runner 2049 and Dune were both shot in the Hungarian capital. I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with tax breaks.
This film will feature a new original story

Not much is known about the film other than it is reported to be a standalone feature based in the same universe as Sir Ridley Scott’s 1979 film Alien. So far, the only cast member confirmed to be a part of the production appears to be Cailee Spaeny, who was in Mare Of Easttown and The Craft Legacy.
With production imminent, it seems we may even get some first shots of the film and perhaps a teaser trailer before the year is over. Romulus is just the preproduction title and we can expect a less Star Trek/Roman-themed name once the movie gets further into production.
