It’s been revealed that The Conjuring 4 could end up being the final movie in the horror franchise, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. This was revealed by the movies’ director himself, James Wan, during an interview with Collider.
The Conjuring franchise has been a huge money-spinner for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. The movies have brought in over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. They also didn’t cost too much to make, which means that the profits from these films have been pretty big.
There have been three movies so far in the main Conjuring franchise: The Conjuring, The Conjuring II and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. However, the main movies have also spawned a bunch of spinoffs, such as Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home.
We’ve also had The Nun, and they’re currently making another movie set in The Conjuring cinematic universe, The Crooked Man.

Here’s what James Wan had to say when he was asked about the fourth Conjuring movie, which he previously confirmed was in development:
Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.
Will James Wan direct the movie?

It’s been revealed that David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is returning to pen the script. He previously wrote the script for The Conjuring 2 as well as The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.
The only other thing that we know for sure about the movie is that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are going to return in their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren. We don’t really know anything else about the upcoming movie.
One of the questions I had was whether James Wan might want to direct the movie, given the fact that it looks like it’s going to be the final one in the franchise. He might want to bookend the franchise.
Wan directed the first and second Conjuring movies, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him opt to take the helm of the fourth movie. We’re going to have to wait and see what they decide to do with this fourth, and potentially final Conjuring film.
