The Batman Gets Three Oscar Nominations

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has ended up receiving three nominations at this year’s Oscars, which isn’t bad, but I did expect it to get a few more nods. This was revealed yesterday during an event in which Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced all the nominees.

The DC Comics movie was, in my mind, one of the best films to be released in 2022, and it showed us what could be done with the comic book movie genre on the big screen. Reeves’ movie was an interesting take on the noir-thriller genre, and it really suited Batman.

Many of the Batman comic books have occupied that genre, but we have never really seen a Batman movie take on the genre. The closest we ever came to that were the Tim Burton movies, but even they didn’t quite go the full length.

Well, Reeves took it there, and I think that it really succeeded. It was amplified by a great script, interesting story, terrific performances from the likes of Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz and Jeffrey Wright, and a really impressive score and soundtrack.

The Batman should have come away with more than three Oscar nominations

In the end, The Batman was nominated in what are described as ‘technical categories’ which superhero movies often end up being nominated for. The Batman earned nominations for Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects.

However, the good thing is that this puts the movie in competition with some of the year’s biggest blockbusters, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The Best Makeup and Hairstyling category includes nominations for All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverElvis, and The Whale.

Best Sound nominees include All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Batman, Elvis, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Finally, the Best Visual Effects category pits The Batman up against All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Top Gun: Maverick.

No Best Picture nomination for The Batman

Personally, I would have liked to have seen The Batman be nominated in the Best Picture category, and I think it had a real shot given the fact that there are now up to ten movies nominated in that category.

It seems as though the Matt Reeves movie might have narrowly missed out on that category, which is a shame. I genuinely thought that it had a real shot of getting in there, which would have been such a good coup for the movie and the comic book movie genre in general.

Alas, it didn’t make it. But, the good news is that the movie will have a presence at this year’s ceremony, and all the people involved in making the picture will be in attendance.

The likes of Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright and Colin Farrell will all be there. At least, I hope they will, along with everyone else that actually got this film made.

Colin Farrell will definitely be there as he ended up receiving a Best Actor nomination for his performance in The Banshees Of Inisherin.

The 95th Oscars take place on Sunday, March 12th. Are you ready for it?
