It’s official – Andy Serkis will be playing Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman.
The Batman’s director, Matt Reeves, revealed the news via his Twitter account, which of course means the cast is official.
The director tweeted: “And here comes #Alfred!” and he accompanied the tweet with a gif of Serkis running down a red carpet giving high fives to members of the crowd.
It looked like this gif was taken from a premiere of one of the Planet of the Apes movies.
Personally, I think Serkis will make a perfect Alfred alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
It sounds to me as if they’re going for a more ‘active’ Alfred in the upcoming movie.

He might help more with Bruce Wayne’s investigations and actually get to fight a little.
In some of the comics, Alfred has a rather interesting backstory where he was in the SAS, and actually was a really good fighter.
I think that Serkis’ Alfred would be much more suited to this sort of character, and he’ll be less like the Michael Cain version of the character.
The Batman has a really incredible cast with the likes of Robert Pattinson as Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and now Andy Serkis as Alfred.
That is arguably one of the best cast ever assembled for a comic book movie.
It truly is a remarkable cast, and I think each role has been cast very well indeed.
