After the recent Star Wars Celebration, we now find out that Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is still working on his own Star Wars film. Apart from last month’s update, where we also reported that he meant to star in the movie he is writing for Star Wars as well, the newest information about the project comes from the President of Lucasfilm herself, Kathleen Kennedy.
The event truly celebrated Star Wars as it introduced new projects in development. Top of the list was the announcement of a new movie that stars Daisy Ridley as Rey once again.
However, it does still lead some fans to be cautiously optimistic about the franchise they have loved since childhood. Many still point out that the same enthusiasm was evident back in the 2020 Disney Investor Day. And from that list of projects, a movie has yet to see the light of day.
Just what exactly is going on behind closed doors? Other studios under Disney were still able to deliver movies despite the pandemic and the height of health protocols. However, Lucasfilm seems to be struggling to bring the Star Wars franchise back to the big screen. Solo: A Star Wars Story and The Rise of Skywalker hurt the studio so badly that it actually stopped them from making movies.
Or is it that the fans and legacy fans’ expectations got to the studios’ core creatives that they ended up second-guessing their decisions until they couldn’t complete anything at all? Because we are pretty sure that the studio has the budget to make movies. Nevertheless, it seems that Lucasfilm is erring on the side of caution. At the very least, they have some things going on.

Variety reports that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy gave more information on projects that were announced last April 7. It also included updates on projects left behind the stage curtain. One of them being Waititi’s project for the galaxy far, far away. Kennedy said:
Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself. He doesn’t really want to bring others into that process and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So we want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing. But we’re going to make that one day.

From its announcement in 2020, no one exactly had a clear idea of how or what story Waititi was planning to focus on. It was just described as a stand-alone story with new characters in some corner of the galaxy away from the Skywalker Saga.
Chances are that Waititi will also have a prominent role in front of the camera for the upcoming movie.
Without any collaborators for the story and screenplay, at least none that were officially announced yet, Waititi is the only one from whom the script will come from. In fact, some months ago, there was already word that he had finished it. But, the biggest disappointing development was when the director-writer himself was not sure if it’ll really enter production.
Now, at least Lucasfilm is saying they are still interested in making a move. Let’s just hope that they keep to their timetable and make sure a movie gets to the cinemas just on time.
What do you think of Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie still being in the process of development for Lucasfilm?
