It’s been revealed that Taika Waititi is looking to not only write and direct this next Star Wars movie, but he wants to star in it also. This comes after it was revealed that Lucasfilm and Disney had scrapped a bunch of their upcoming Star Wars movies.
It was revealed that Lucasfilm had opted to cancel Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars movies. Feige had been working on a Star Wars movie behind the scenes. It was going to be written by Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness writer, Michael Waldron.
Jenkins was originally going to make Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. That movie, along with Kevin Feige’s Star Wars flick, was announced by Kathleen Kennedy at 2020’s Disney’s Investors Day Presentation. However, they’ve opted to cancel both projects.
It had been long rumoured that Jenkins’ movie had been cancelled. However, the filmmaker did come out and claim that she was still working on the project after there were multiple reports that it had been scrapped. It seems as though Disney has now pulled the plug on the movie.

So, according to Variety, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still in active development. I think that’s good news because I’m interested in seeing his vision for the Star Wars universe.
However, after watching Thor: Love And Thunder, I was a bit worried about his upcoming projects. I do wonder whether Waititi’s charm and whole schtick has been lost on us slightly recently.
Here’s what Variety had to say about Waititi’s Star Wars movie and his desire to star in the picture:
Sources say Thor: Love and Thunder filmmaker Taika Waititicontinues to work on his possible Star Wars feature, and he would most likely have a part in it as well, similar in prominence to his standout role as an imaginary Adolf Hitler in his Oscar-winning 2019 feature Jojo Rabbit.
Is this a good idea?

One of the questions I have is would this be a good idea? I’m not so sure. I’m not surprised that he wants to star in the movie. He has a history of starring in his own films.
He starred in the likes of Jojo Rabbit, What We Do In The Shadows and his Thor movies, in which he voiced and did the motion capture for Korg.
Waititi also appeared very briefly in what I still believe to be his best movie, Hunt For The Wilderpeople. I actually think he’s never directed a movie in which he hasn’t had some sort of acting role.
He appeared in Eagle Vs Shark, which was his first feature film. Waititi also appeared in his second feature-length movie, Boy. So, it seems as though if you hire Waititi to make a movie, odds are that he’s going to put himself in the film.
Is that a bad thing? I don’t think so. He’s an excellent actor, and he tends to write most of his films. The only movie he directed that he didn’t also write was Thor: Ragnarok.
