The very first trailer for the upcoming The Super Mario Bros Movie has been released, and this film seems like everything we Mario fans could have wished for. The movie, which is being made by Illumination with Nintendo’s very close supervision, is going to be quite something, and I have a feeling that it might end up being the highest-grossing movie of 2023. I don’t know what it is about this film, but I think it’s going to do very, very well at the box office.
So, this trailer was part of a Nintendo Direct, which I actually think is a really fun way to reveal the movie’s trailer. The Nintendo Direct was streamed live at New York Comic Con, and it featured some words from the iconic Japanese video game developer, Shigeru Miyamoto. We also saw Chris Pratt and Jack Black talk about voicing Mario and Bowser respectively. They then revealed the movie’s very first teaser trailer, and I am now so hyped for this movie!

Nintendo has been rather cautious about allowing movies of their video game properties to be made, and for good reason. The company has been haunted by the disaster that was the 1993 movie, Super Mario Bros., and they have been very reluctant to let other studios make movies based on their properties. They could have made a whole load of cash by licensing out the movie rights to their many video game characters, but they are very protective of their IPs, and I’m pretty sure that the 1993 live-action Mario Bros movie is the main reason they are like that.
However, I think this might have been for the best because I believe that Nintendo and Illumination make the perfect pair. Illumination’s movies are, on the whole, pretty solid, and I think they’ve made some really good movies over the years. The Despicable Me movies have been really well received by both critics and audiences, and I am a massive fan of The Minions movies. Yes, they have made some pretty bad movies also (The Lorax is a pretty terrible film). However, they’ve also made other films such as the two Sing movies and the two The Secret Life Of Pets films, which are pretty decent.

All that is to say that I think the Super Mario movie franchise is in safe hands with Illumination, and I’m also glad to hear that Nintendo is being so hands-on with the projects also. However, I’m still not entirely convinced by the choice of voice actor for the role of Mario in the movie. I just don’t think Chris Pratt has the right voice for the role. I find it rather odd that they would choose him when the guy who does the voice in the games (Charles Martinet) is American and is also a pretty good actor.
However, Martinet is part of the ensemble voice cast, so maybe he and Pratt are working together to bring Mario to life. As for the rest of the cast, I think it’s pretty darn good. Pratt will be joined by Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Kevin Michael Richardson and Sebastian Maniscalco.
The Super Mario Bros Movie is going to be released in cinemas in the United States on April 7th, 2023. Are you looking forward to watching it?
