With the announcement of Star Wars: Episode VIII’s title, The Last Jedi (love it), I’ve been wondering what it could mean for Luke Skywalker, Rey and Kylo Ren. Here are my thoughts.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Has a nice right to it doesn’t it. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but I did come up with the name myself almost a year ago when I was working for melty (still waiting for Disney’s check in the post…). However, the title does bring up some interesting questions. Who is ‘the last Jedi’? Is the title referring to Luke, or is Rey going to end up being all that remains of the Jedi Order? Or, in what would be an unprecedented twist, could Kylo Ren end up seeing the Light and turn his back on Supreme Leader Snoke and the Dark Side?
Personally I’d love to see Kylo redeem himself, and I’d also like to see Rey turn to the Dark Side. There have been rumours suggesting that she might be related to Emperor Palpatine himself. I don’t think this will be the case and I’d like to see Rian Johnson’s film steer the franchise away from the original trilogy. In all honesty, I can’t see Rey turning to the Dark Side, mainly because I don’t think Disney would let Johnson go down that route. We’ve already read reports suggesting that Disney’s executives ordered Rogue One‘s reshoots because they felt that Gareth Edwards’ movie was too bleak. I have no idea how accurate these reports were, but one thing’s for sure, Disney wants as many people as possible to see these new Star Wars films, and children are a huge part of their audience.
I acctually think that the title refers to both Luke and Rey. We know that Luke will train Rey to be Jedi in The Last Jedi. What I could see happening is a final barnstorming battle between Luke and Rey on one side, and Kylo and his Knights of Ren buddies on the other. I would also love to see Supreme Leader Snoke’s proper introduction in this scene. So far we’ve only seen him as a hologram. He could be two feet tall – Yoda style – for all we know.
So what I could see happening in this battle sequence is the terrible death of yet another beloved Star Wars character, Luke Skywalker, probably at the hand of Snoke himself. This would then leave Rey as the last Jedi standing. Luke might even tell Rey in his final words that she’s no longer a Padawan, but a true Jedi. That would send chills down my spine and tears down my cheeks.
Of course, this is all pure speculation. I have absolutely zero insight into the next film. However, I will say this, I did predict Episode VIII’s title, and I might also be right on this as well. I think it would be a brilliant plot. Yes, perhaps a slightly familiar one in the Star Wars saga, but effective nonetheless.
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi will be in cinemas on December 15th, 2017. Are you ready?
