A Horror Star Wars Project is In The Works Over At Lucasfilm

Well, this is something I didn’t think I’d be writing anytime soon. Lucasfilm is officially working on a Star Wars horror project—according to Tony Gilroy, anyway.

I’m not going to lie; this idea excites me a lot.

Where did this come from?

Tony Gilroy, the showrunner behind Andor, recently let slip in an interview with Business Insider that a Star Wars horror project is already underway at Disney. When asked if he’d ever tackle a darker Star Wars story, Tony (67) casually replied:

They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that.

Honestly, that’s enough to get me hyped already.

Could Star Wars really do horror?

Star Wars and horror don’t immediately seem like a perfect fit. The franchise has always aimed for broad appeal, focusing on epic adventures rather than genuine scares.

But I’ve always thought there was huge untapped potential to explore the genuinely creepy side of the Star Wars universe. Think about Darth Vader’s terrifying presence or the unsettling atmosphere of the Emperor’s throne room.

It’s honestly surprising it hasn’t been explored properly yet.

Tony’s involvement in Andor proved that Star Wars can handle mature storytelling incredibly well. If Tony says Lucasfilm is working on horror, it’s safe to assume it’ll be serious and mature rather than something kid-friendly.

He added:

The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe… you can do anything.

Given how good Andor was, I trust his judgment.

Fans have wanted this forever

Let’s be real, Star Wars horror has been a fan dream for decades. Even Mark Hamill himself once expressed interest in exploring a genuinely scary Star Wars story.

Fans have always speculated about darker corners of the galaxy, like ancient Sith lore or terrifying encounters in deep space. It’s about time Lucasfilm caught up with these fan theories.

What could this project look like?

There’s no official confirmation whether this horror project will be a film, TV series, or something else entirely. Lucasfilm is notoriously secretive, so details are scarce.

But personally, I’d prefer a Disney+ series. A series could allow more room to explore the psychological horror elements without being constrained by the typical two-hour runtime of a movie.

Potential storylines?

There are endless possibilities here. Imagine a Sith-based horror story where a group encounters dark force rituals gone wrong.

Or what about a haunted ship story, Alien-style, set on an abandoned Imperial Star Destroyer? Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I realise Star Wars horror has incredible potential.

Could it tie into existing Star Wars series?

Given Tony’s role on Andor, there’s a chance this new horror project could connect to existing shows. Maybe it could tie into the darker espionage elements Andor explored.

On the other hand, maybe it’ll be a completely standalone story. Either way, I’m intrigued.

Why Lucasfilm might finally embrace horror

Lucasfilm seems more open lately to experimenting with genre storytelling. Series like The Mandalorian and Andor have shown the franchise can expand beyond traditional storytelling.

Plus, Disney knows they need fresh ideas to keep the Star Wars universe feeling exciting. A horror series would certainly achieve that.

Will it really be scary?

The big question: can Star Wars truly go full horror? Disney owns Lucasfilm, and we know they typically prioritise family-friendly content.

However, Andor pushed boundaries. If Disney can let Tony’s show handle morally grey characters and dark themes, they could probably allow a horror project to be genuinely scary.

The impact on the Star Wars brand

Some fans might worry a horror project would undermine the spirit of Star Wars. But honestly, the universe is big enough to handle multiple genres.

Marvel has successfully experimented with different styles like horror in Werewolf By Night, so why not Star Wars?

Who could lead this project?

Tony didn’t confirm who is creatively behind this horror project. I’d love someone like Mike Flanagan, who brilliantly handled supernatural horror with The Haunting of Hill House, to be involved.

Whoever it is, they’ll need to balance scares with genuine Star Wars storytelling. It won’t be easy, but I trust Lucasfilm to find the right person.

When will we find out more?

It’s probably going to be a while before Lucasfilm officially announces anything. Knowing Disney, they’ll probably wait until a major event like Star Wars Celebration or D23 Expo.

Until then, we only have Tony’s comments to fuel our speculation.

Will Star Wars horror be successful?

There’s definitely risk involved. Star Wars fans can be notoriously protective of the franchise.

But if Lucasfilm gets the tone right, this could be exactly what Star Wars needs to stay fresh. And personally, I’d definitely tune in for something darker and more intense.

Star Wars horror feels long overdue. Tony’s comments confirm Lucasfilm is finally ready to explore the franchise’s darker corners—and it’s about time.

Whether it’s a haunted ship, Sith rituals, or something totally unexpected, I’m fully on board. Now we just wait (impatiently) for official confirmation from Disney.
