Squid Game Season 2 might not be released on Netflix until 2024, which I’m sure will upset all the fans of the show that want to see the next seasons as soon as possible. This news comes after the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, revealed to Deadline that there isn’t even a script yet.
Here’s what Dong-Hyuk had to say about the upcoming season of the hit Netflix series:
There will be more great games, that’s all I can say. I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.

This interview was conducted back in March, and it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that they hadn’t even started writing the scripts yet. The second season was renewed very soon after the first season had aired and I got the impression that there was no real idea in mind for where the second season could do. However, it has to be said that there was something of a cliffhanger ending to Season 1.
The show quickly became Netflix’s biggest hit ever. According to Variety, the show had reached a staggering 1.65 billion hours of streaming in the first 28 days after it premiered on September 17, 2021. If you take all those hours and convert them into years, it equates to 182,000 years in total, which is just bonkers.

The really crazy thing about this show is that it took the creator, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, almost ten years before he finally managed to convince a studio to let him make the series. Nearly everyone he pitched the series to rejected it. Imagine being one of the ones who passed on the show! They must be kicking themselves now. Fans are now desperate to know what’s going on with Squid Game Season 2, and it feels as though they are taking things slow as far as the series is concerned.
However, we know, thanks to the series creator, that Season 2 is going to feature one big change from the first season. During an interview with Deadline, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed the following:
The biggest change will be the change of [Lee Jung-jae’s] character. Because he’s a different guy in season 2. You know he turned his hair colour to red, and he became like something more like, serious, more like going for revenge so his character will be totally different.

Lee Jung-jae played Seong Gi-hun in the first season of the new Netflix series. Gi-hun did end the series with red hair, but he also seemed determined to bring down the whole organisation that’s still going ahead with these sick games. The series ends with him almost boarding a plane to go and visit his daughter. However, he ends up changing his mind at the very last second in order to seek out who’s still running the games. I’m pretty sure that season two will see Gi-hun do everything he can to end the games once and for all.
So, it seems as though Squid Game Season 2 is going to focus a lot on Gi-hun and his attempts to find out who’s really behind these games and bring them down. That would be a really interesting way to go for Season 2, but they’ve got to make sure they do it properly. The second season is going to be a huge deal, and I know that Netflix won’t want to mess it up. However, they’ve also got to be careful not to get in Hwang Dong-hyuk’s way. He’s the creative force behind the series, and the streamer will have to just give him and let him do whatever he wants.

It also sounds as though Season 2 might be something of a revenge story. They are the best stories! Dong-Hyuk revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that doesn’t want to give in to the reactions of his audience. Here’s what he said on the matter:
I’ve seen many reactions from people about the show, but I don’t want to make season two as a response to those reactions. The philosophies I put in season one all naturally extend to season two. Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next.
This was when he started talking about the ‘revenge’ factor of Season 2. Here’s what he said about Gi-hun wanting revenge in Season 2:
I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character.
