Julian Sands, the actor known for playing Jor-El in The CW’s Smallville series has been missing for 12 days in the California Mountains. Bounding Into Comics reports that Sands’ family issues a statement while the search for him continues.
The British actor Sands is known for films like The Killing Fields, Warlock, Arachnophobia and Leaving Las Vegas. He’s also worked on a number of TV projects like Smallville, 24 and more recently, he was in Netflix’s What/If. Sands also did voice work and motion capture for the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
It was reported that Sands went missing on January 13, 2023. He went hiking on Mount Baldy, California in the San Gabriel Mountains. This is northeast of Los Angeles.
Last week, his car was found close to the area where he was reported missing.
Police tracked Sands’ possible location by pinging his phone. On January 15, it was suggested that the phone lost power and could not send any more pings.

It is believed that Sands might have taken the “Baldy Bowl Trail” which reaches the highest summit of the San Gabriel Mountains. Reports say that the area had evidence of more recent avalanches. Spokesperson of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office Mara Rodriguez said on CNN:
There’s no ground search at this time, the conditions are just too dangerous for us to insert any of our search and rescue personnel into the mountain.
They did try searching by air using helicopters and drones, when possible, but so far, their efforts have not been successful. Without the ability to do a ground search, the search could be long and difficult.
Officials are unsure if they will find Julian Sands alive. Rodriguez said:
Nothing is off the table. But obviously the conditions there are very extreme. We just don’t know what the turnout is going to be.
On January 19, the Sheriff’s Office’s official Facebook page issued a warning for potential hikers:
Over the last four weeks, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt Baldy and in the surrounding area. These rescue missions have been for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, during these past 4 weeks, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves.
Due to the high winds, the snow has turned to ice making hiking extremely dangerous. Sheriff’s Search and Rescue efforts are often hampered by poor weather along with dangerous avalanche conditions. The recent storms that brought the snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those that feel they have a high level of experience.
