Shazam!’s director, David F. Sandberg, has shared a hilarious picture of Shazam in the background watching Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman duke it out in Batman v Superman.
Zachary Levi, you might know him from the brilliant TV series Chuck, will be bringing Shazam to the big screen in 2019, much to my delight. Shazam is one of DC Comics wackier properties. The whole premise is of a boy who can turn into a superhero when he says the magic word, “Shazam”. It’s literally every kid’s dream, and now it’s going to be brought to life on the big screen. David F. Sandberg is directing. Some of his previous work includes Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation.
You’ve probably noticed that both of those movies are horror films and it is true that much of Sandberg’s early work was in that genre. However, horror movie directors often make the jump to comedy and the superhero movie genre in particular very well. James Gunn, Scott Derrickson and James Wan have all made the transition from horror to making superhero movies, and they’ve done pretty well – although it remains to be seen whether Wan’s Aquaman is any good.

Sandberg is also another director who’d very active on social media, and he recently tweeted an image of Shazam with two fellow DC Comics characters. The picture is of Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman starring one another down (it’s taken from one of the Batman v Superman posters), and someone has cleverly put Levi’s Shazam sipping on a big drink of some red-coloured fizzy pop in the background.
This is truly a perfect metaphor for the DCEU right now. The picture is basically saying that Batman v Superman was a bit of a dud and it’s time for Shazam! to change things. It’s also a clear indicator that Shazam! tone will be radically different from that of Batman v Superman and many of the other DCEU movies. Let’s just hope that Sandberg’s film doesn’t let us down.
Shazam! will be hitting cinemas on April 5th, 2019.
