Sam Raimi has revealed that he never believed that Sony Pictures would want to hire him to direct their Spider-Man movie.
Raimi revealed this during a recent interview with Variety.
So, Raimi revealed that he didn’t think he’d actually get the job.
He revealed that his agent actually told him that Sony had 18 directors they would rather hire than him.
This means that Raimi was not Sony’s first choice for the job.
“My agent, Josh Donen, said, ‘They want to be honest with you. There’s about 18 directors they’d rather have than you on a list,'” Raimi explained.
“And I said, ‘OK, well, tell them I’m number 19.'”

Raimi went to the meeting with Sony Pictures thinking he had no chance of getting to direct the Spider-Man movie.
That said, he dressed up in a suit and took the meeting.
However, he revealed that he didn’t want to talk any longer than the hour Sony had allotted him.
So, when 60 minutes hit, Raimi got up and left the meeting.
“I was very aware of how they didn’t want me,” Raimi recalled.
“So I really didn’t want to also overstay my welcome.”
Funnily enough, Raimi couldn’t have been more wrong.
Apparently, the meeting was going really well and the Sony executives were shocked that he decided to leave during the middle of his pitch.
They thought Raimi was doing an excellent job.
“The meeting was going very, very well,” Sony executive Matt Tolmach told Variety.
“And all of a sudden, Sam looked at his watch, stood up and said, ‘Well, thank you very much for your time. I appreciate your having me in.'”
