Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi is rumoured to be eyed by Marvel to helm the sequel and Avengers: Secret Wars.
There is a lot riding on Avengers. Mainly, the movie itself is a major event for Marvel. It’s the movie where all superheroes gather to do a common goal. It’s the most successful title in the Marvel film lineup. The weakest Avengers film has earned over $1.39 billion, while the most successful ended up bringing in $2.7 billion.
It’s a tough act to follow, with many fans wanting the Russo Bros to return to do the sequels. Unfortunately, the Russos are busy, and it seems that they have no plans of coming back anytime soon. Even if they did have intentions of coming back, it looks like they won’t be able to do so in time for Avengers: Secret Wars.

The comic book studios seem to be looking at familiar directors to helm their upcoming films. In a recent report by Jeff Sneider, co-host of The Hot Mic, he said that the studio has a rumoured shortlist of directors being discussed to work on the Avengers sequel. Ryan Coogler, Jon Favreau, Sam Raimi, and Jon Watts .
But out of that list, it seems only one seems to stand out.
Sneider reports that the Evil Dead director Sam Raimi might be Marvel’s top choice to lead Doctor Strange 3 and Avengers: Secret Wars. While having Raimi reprise his directorial skills for the Strange threequel is an obvious choice, there is no exact reason why he is the top choice for the main event for MCU’s Phase 6.

In the podcast, it was discussed that Favreau is currently busy with Star Wars. Watts, on the other hand, was supposed to helm Fantastic Four but has left the project. Reports say that he needed to take a break from superhero films. As to why Coogler hasn’t been chosen, there were no details as of yet.
One possible reason why Raimi could be the top choice is because of how he handled working on Doctor Strange. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was happy that the seasoned director Raimi needed very little supervision compared to the other directors he has worked with in the past. With such a massive task of handling the sheer number of top star actors, this could be the reason why he’s being considered to lead Avengers: Secret Wars.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness has been successful for Marvel. It almost reached the $1 billion mark. Just a little shy of the worldwide success of Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Not only that, but Doctor Strange 2 also marks Raimi’s return to directing since 2013 and his return to the comic book genre since Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
Sneider has added that Destin Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) was also interested in helming the project. Cretton is currently the director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. He seems to be an obvious choice considering he’s already set to work on one of the Avengers films.
It’s not impossible to think that he can direct two films back-to-back. But it’s also possible that if he did direct Secret Wars, it would possibly conflict with the scheduled release for Phase 6.
So far, the news of Raimi taking the helm of both Doctor Strange 3 and Avengers: Secret Wars is, for now, a rumour. But we do know that Marvel is not taking the decision lightly.
