The filming of Deadpool 3, featuring the well-loved actor Ryan Reynolds, is facing unexpected challenges due to the ongoing Writers’ Strike in the entertainment industry. As the strike continues, it’s having a significant effect on various film and television productions, leading to delays and shutdowns. Even highly anticipated projects like Marvel Studios’ Blade haven’t been immune to these disruptions.
Nonetheless, several productions like Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Daredevil: Born Again, and Captain America: New World Order have managed to remain largely unscathed despite the prevailing industry turmoil. In a surprising turn of events, Deadpool 3 commenced its production just a few days ago in the United Kingdom.
However, the production of Deadpool 3 is facing a unique obstacle, and it has everything to do with Reynolds’ well-known knack for improvisation. A recent report from Yahoo has revealed that Reynolds, known for his comedic talent and impromptu dialogues, particularly in his portrayal of the iconic anti-hero Deadpool, is not allowed to improvise during the production of Deadpool 3 due to the ongoing strike.
The Impact of the Improvisation Ban on Deadpool 3

The reason behind this restriction lies in the rules set by the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA). Reynolds, who is credited as a writer for the film, cannot deviate from the script or improvise under the guidelines established by the WGA for the duration of the strike. This puts a damper on Reynolds’ usual process, as his improvisational prowess has been a significant factor in the success of the previous Deadpool films.
There is a small loophole to this rule, given that Reynolds is also a producer on the film. According to WGA rules, producers are permitted to make “casual minor adjustments in dialogue or narration made prior to or during the period of principal photography.” However, the WGA has urged producers to refrain from writer-like activities during the strike to maintain solidarity with the writers.
This situation bears a quirky resemblance to Reynolds’ original role as Deadpool in X-Men: Origins: Wolverine, which was ironically born out of the 2007 Writers’ Strike. In that instance, Reynolds ended up writing most of his lines due to the lack of script direction. This time, however, he must adhere to the guild’s guidelines or risk expulsion from the Guild itself.

The restriction on Reynolds’ improvisation could potentially impact the quality of Deadpool 3. The ban on what he excels at could create a disappointing viewing experience for fans who have come to love the spontaneity and humour he brings to the role. Marvel Studios might have to reconsider their filming strategy and focus more on filming aspects less likely to require script alterations, such as action sequences or other minor connective scenes.
Every Marvel Cinematic Universe project schedules a period for reshoots, and Deadpool 3 will not be an exception. However, given the current circumstances, the reshoots might be more extensive than usual.
With the looming possibility of Deadpool 3 being put on hold before the production concludes, it could join other productions such as Blade and Thunderbolts which are currently on pause until the Writers’ Strike ends.
Despite the challenges, Deadpool 3 is scheduled to premiere in theatres on November 8th, 2024. As the industry eagerly awaits the resolution of the Writers’ Strike, fans all around the world are also hoping for a swift resolution, so they can once again enjoy the inimitable Ryan Reynolds in his iconic role as Deadpool. The present circumstances serve as a stark reminder of the integral role writers play in the entertainment industry, and the ripple effect their actions can have on even the most anticipated projects.
