Russo Brothers Frontrunners To Direct Avengers: Secret Wars

The Russo Brothers are reportedly the frontrunners to direct the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars movie, which I think would be a good choice. This report comes to us from Geekosity, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Marvel Studios had opted to get the directorial duo to return to helm one of their most important upcoming movies.

There have been so many rumours about this upcoming Avengers movie. I’ve heard people suggest that Marvel is keen on bringing a while bunch of characters and actors back. The likes of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, Wesley Snipes and even Nicolas Cage are reportedly going to return for the movie. Now, I’m not sure whether Avengers: Secret Wars is really going to feature all of these actors, but it would be so cool if it did!

There have been rumours that Ryan Coogler might get to direct Avengers: Secret Wars. However, there have been some people suggesting that Coogler might decide against directing another movie. The director revealed that he almost quit directing after Chadwick Boseman’s death. However, he decided to carry on with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and I am so glad he did. The best way to honour Chadwick Boseman would be to have Ryan Coogler make the very best film he could make.

So, with that in mind, it makes sense that Coogler might want a long break from the MCU after making the Black Panther sequel, and I have to say that Joe and Anthony’s careers haven’t taken off since they directed their last MCU movie. They’ve been making films, but they’ve been pretty poorly received. Their last movie, The Gray Man, released on Netflix not too long ago, didn’t do well with critics. The film they made before that, Cherry, which was made for Apple TV+, was also pretty poorly received.

I have a feeling that the directors might feel as though they need to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in order to make a film that might get them back on the right track. It seems as though Anthony and Joe worked well within Marvel’s rather strict guidelines. Perhaps they just work better in that sort of environment. There are some people who make their best work when they are restricted slightly. It doesn’t happen too often, but sometimes it does.

I also think that Marvel Studios needs a safe pair of hands for this upcoming Avengers movie. They trust Anthony and Joe, and I think it would be smarter for the studio to go with someone they can really rely on, as opposed to an untested director. They did reveal that Destin Daniel Cretton would be directing Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and he’s another director who seems to work well with Marvel Studios. He made Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and is also working on a Wonder Man series for Marvel which will be released on Disney Plus.
