Who doesn’t want to see another Independence Day movie…? Honestly, I’m not sure if I really want to.
I loved the first Independence Day film, but the second film was a bit of a dud as far as I’m concerned.
Independence Day: Resurgence was a mess of a film with none of the original film’s wow factor.
Perhaps the fact that Will Smith wasn’t in the second one was a factor in me not liking it that much.
However, the whole film just felt perfunctory. It felt unnecessary.
Its director, Roland Emmerich, was once Hollywood’s big special effects director.
His early films were groundbreaking.
Yet, in recent times he’s hit a bit of a slump.
However, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, the director was asked whether he’d ever be able to make a third Independence Day movie.
Roland Emmerich still wants to make another Independence Day movie

Here’s what the director had to say on the matter:
I don’t know. I really haven’t even gotten to it. I had naturally talked with Fox about it, and then when they got bought, I kind of said, ‘Well, that’s probably [over.]’ But I don’t know. We’ll see, it’s kind of like it could happen, it could not happen. Hollywood is like a strange, strange place these days, because I have a feeling Disney would maybe be interested in doing it. They like that kind of franchise movie.
The fact that Disney now owns the Independence Day movie franchise makes me think they might hold out on a third movie.
They’ll look at the numbers and see that Resurgence didn’t do so well at the box office.
This means that there isn’t really the appetite for this kind of movie anymore.
However, if they get a really good pitch from Emmerich and maybe bring Will Smith back, maybe then they might start thinking about it.
