Robert Downey Jr is reportedly adding yet another project to his pipeline, which could be another detective movie. However, this upcoming detective film is said to be a sci-fi movie. Given the way this upcoming project is being described, it certainly has Downey Jr’s name all over it!
He’s not an actor who is new to sci-fi. He’s had an impressive stint in the MCU as Iron Man, and there are certainly elements of those movies that are science-fiction. He’s also not new to playing a detective, having played the legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes in two movies. Interestingly, the actor is reportedly going to be playing Sherlock for a third time.
After his phenomenal portrayal of Tony Stark in the MCU, Downey has been keener on working behind the camera as a producer save for his underperforming movie Doolittle which was released back in 2020. Projects he’s starred in since then include The Age of A.I., The Bond, Sr., The Sunshine Place, Perry Mason and Sweet Tooth.
Perhaps the actor who played the MCU’s iconic billionaire, philanthropist, and playboy has tended to shy away from the spotlight. However, he now has more than a handful of upcoming projects as additional titles to his actor belt. The movie we’re going to see him in next is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, in which he portrays the role of Lewis Strauss. Pre-production titles include Play Dirty, Sherlock Holmes 3 and Average Height, Average Build.
All-Star Weekend has also been completed, in which he is credited as a Mexican Stranger. Meanwhile, The Sympathizer television mini-series has entered postproduction which will see Downey play a rather interesting character. However, the details are still being kept firmly under wraps.
Recent reports indicate that there will be an additional title to the upcoming projects that Robert Downey Jr will be starring in.

According to Giant Freakin Robot, Robert Downey Jr will team up with director Shane Black again for a future dystopian detective story called The Nightshade Chronicles.
An official announcement is not yet available, which means that things may still change. It is, however, essential to note that Downey and Black have worked several times in the past as well as at present with the project Play Dirty. This indicates that the two have established a working harmony that may be comparable to other actor-director teams.

Previously, Downey and Black worked together in Black’s directorial debut film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which was an R-rated mystery and thriller/LGBTQ+ film in 2005.
The movie starred Downey, Val Kilmer, and Michelle Monaghan, collected a very decent rating from the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with 86% on its Tomatometer and 87% for its Audience Score. However, with a production budget of $15M, it only barely broke even at $ 16.8M at the worldwide box office.
After Downey’s successful performance as Tony Stark in Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Marvel Studios got Black to helm Iron Man 3. As mentioned above, the duo teams up again soon in an upcoming project titled Play Dirty which Black will also be writing the screenplay and Downey as its producer.

It is most likely that the new project with Shane Black as the director will start its production after Play Dirty.
As a producer, Robert Downey Jr seems to already have his hands full. We are looking forward to finally seeing the selection of vintage automobiles from his personal collection that he has decided to update and become more eco-friendly in his upcoming documentary series Downey’s Dream Cars. The series will start streaming on June 22 in Max, formerly HBO Max.
Aside from that and Play Dirty, producer Robert Downey Jr has Lure, The Sympathizer, Helltown, A Head Full of Ghosts, an untitled John Brinkley Biopic and Constance all in different stages of production.
The still-to-be-added project with Black is yet to be officially announced.
