While the film industry has been rocked by schedule changes and delays, there’s one cinematic bastion that has held its ground. Amongst a sea of modified release dates in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), one film has stubbornly maintained its schedule. That film is none other than the much-anticipated sequel, The Marvels.

Recent times have witnessed a cascade of shifts in the MCU’s upcoming project list. Among the main reasons for these changes, the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike has played a significant role, putting various projects from different studios on hold. On top of this, the MCU’s Phase 4 came under scrutiny for quality and for releasing a lot of content in a short period, prompting a revised schedule that allowed for extra time in production and a breather for audiences.

Yet, amidst these shifts, one film remained steadfast in its original schedule: Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, a crucial entry in Phase 5 of the MCU (via Screen Rant).

The Marvels: A Tale of Resilience

The Marvels is set to be the next MCU release, holding firm to its November 10, 2023, release date. This much-awaited sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) brings together three similar yet distinct superheroes: Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). The power dynamics of these characters, as well as the film’s multiple settings, ensure a complex narrative structure that warranted extensive post-production work.

The journey to its final release date wasn’t without turbulence. Initially scheduled for a July 8, 2022, release, The Marvels had to navigate a series of rescheduling, hopping from one release date to another before finally settling on November 10, 2023. This constant reshuffling caused the film to jump from Phase 4 to Phase 5 of the MCU. The decision to delay The Marvels was largely influenced by the need to give the post-production team more time to perfect the CGI and visual effects, addressing some of the main criticisms of MCU’s Phase 4.

Being the next in line for release and the only MCU film that’s completed, it’s logical that The Marvels wouldn’t need another delay. Unlike other MCU projects currently in pre-production and filming, The Marvels is unaffected by the WGA strike. With the extra time allotted for post-production, it’s primed to meet its scheduled November release.

Looking Ahead in the MCU

Prior to the reshuffling of the MCU’s schedule, The Marvels was to be followed by Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and Blade. However, the MCU landscape post-The Marvels now looks strikingly different. For instance, fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Sam Wilson as Captain America, but they won’t have to wait too long to reunite with Deadpool, whose third movie (and his first as part of the MCU) will now arrive after The Marvels on May 3, 2024.

Before Disney’s many alterations to the MCU’s schedule, The Marvels was to be followed by Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and Blade. But now, the MCU post-The Marvels looks quite different. The audience will have to wait to see Sam Wilson as Captain America but won’t have to wait long to reunite with Deadpool, as his third movie (and his first as part of the MCU) will now arrive after The Marvels, on May 3, 2024. Deadpool’s adventures will be followed by Captain America: Brave New World (July 26, 2024), Thunderbolts (December 20, 2024), and Blade (February 14, 2025), closing the MCU’s Phase 5.

What’s to Come in Phase 6?

The order of the announced Phase 6 projects remains the same but with different release dates. Phase 6 will be kicked off by the much-anticipated introduction of the Fantastic Four, arriving on May 2, 2025. This will be followed by the Multiverse Saga’s crossover events Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, now scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively. Surely, all these projects can still undergo more changes and delays. But for now, The Marvels stands as the only MCU movie that kept its release date after Disney’s many scheduling changes.

In the world of cinema, especially for mega franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, release date changes are a common occurrence. They are influenced by a myriad of factors – from production issues, strikes, global events, to simple strategic decisions. However, amidst this sea of changes, it’s remarkable that The Marvels has held its ground and maintained its release date. Whether this is a testament to the movie’s readiness or a strategic move from Marvel, it certainly adds to the anticipation for this next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we look forward to November 10, 2023, one thing is for sure – the world is waiting eagerly for The Marvels to hit the screens.
