Marvel Studios is welcoming Olivia Colman into Phase 5 of the MCU, but it appears that the esteemed British actress wanted to come in way before. Apparently, the Academy Award winner was looking forward to having a go at some gamma ray or a radioactive arachnid’s bite. We also wonder if there is a connection to our July 2022 report on her role.
Actress Olivia Colman received the late Queen’s appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) during Her Majesty’s 2019 Birthday Honours for Colman’s services to drama. Most deservedly so, Colman has received several prestigious awards for her contributions to the art of acting.
Critics lauded Colman’s portrayal of Queen Anne in the 2018 biographical comedy-drama The Favorite. The movie collected ten nominations for the 2019 Oscars, where she won Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
From then, Colman received two more nominations from the Academy Awards. In 2021 she was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in The Father as Anne. She was cast together with the legendary Anthony Hopkins, who won the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
In 2022 she got nominated again for Best Actress at the Oscars for her performance in The Lost Daughter as Leda. The movie was directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also has its writing credits.
Her achievements in the film are only challenged by her accomplishments in television series and special miniseries. In the Primetime Emmy Awards alone, she has collected four nominations for outstanding performances as an actress. Two of which are for a lead role, and the other two are for supporting roles.
She won the 2021 Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Crown as Queen Elizabeth II.
Now, she is in a position to reign over a different kind of monarchy. One that will involve defending Earth from a hostile alien race. And Colman is the most excited fan of the series above all.

In a feature on Empire Magazine via Collider, the appointed CBE disclosed some details of the dynamics of her role, Sonya Falsworth, to that of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. She said:
Fury and Sonya are old friends, although I think his office is cooler. I mean, it’s in space!
She also revealed how much she enjoyed working with the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director/actor saying that Jackson commended her choice of what the US knows as running shoes. She continued:
Working with Sam though, I loved him! Loudest man you’ve ever met. Joyful, funny, naughty. He said he thought my trainers were ‘dope’. Didn’t take them off for a year.
Colman also shared her slight disappointment in learning that some of her expectations coming into the MCU won’t happen in the series despite the war against aliens. During the production, she told:
I kept asking if I could be bitten by something, or fall into a vat of something. They were having none of it.
Perhaps being the British counterpart to Nick Fury already has an incredible level of command and influential power in the story. She may not be superhuman, but she has super influence in international defence.

As Colman is now officially a high-ranking MI6 agent in the MCU, with her name being Sonya Falsworth, we wonder if there is a connection that will introduce Union Jack into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well.
In the Marvel Comics, there are two Union Jack heroes, father and son, listed who were both from Great Britain. Curiously, James Montgomery carried the title of Lord Falsworth and had a wife but was indicated as deceased. They had a son, Brian and a daughter named Jacqueline Falsworth, who became Spitfire.
It would be interesting to have Olivia Colman’s character connect with a Union Jack narrative, especially considering that the comics depicted Union Jack as somewhat Britain’s counterpart to the US’ Captain America during the First World War.
