A new Star Trek original movie is officially in development and will star Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh to reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou. The Emperor returns in a new film in development entitled Star Trek: Section 31.
Paramount+ has announced that the project will begin in the latter months of 2023, and it will be produced by CBS Studios. Star Trek: Section 31 will centre on Emperor Philippa Georgiou as the ruler joins a secret division of Starfleet. The division was formed to protect the United Federation of Planets. The description states that the Emperor will be facing the ‘sins of her past’.
Yeoh’s portrayal of Emperor Philippa Georgiou was very well-received by fans of the franchise. People thought her involvement in the series Star Trek: Discovery was short-lived as her initial character died during the beginning episodes of the first season. The twist was introduced when a parallel universe came into existence, and the rest was history.
Many already welcomed the idea of a series focusing on the emperor’s own personal and professional adventures leading to her reign in the galaxy. The ruthlessness, decisiveness and cunning she has demonstrated only confirmed her capacity to rule despite how cold-blooded she seemed. Yeoh was able to deliver the performance that kept her in the ranks of sci-fi.
Her recent win in the Academy Awards only solidified her prowess not only in the genre of science fiction and action but also in drama and even comedy. Indeed, some may argue that this moment of leading a sci-fi series is long overdue for the actress. However, it is with great anticipation that fans and followers look forward to the fruition of the developing series.

As it happens, the actress had the spin-off already in mind years ago. Executive producer of the new Star Trek series, Alex Kurtzman, said:
All the way back in 2017, before the first season of Star Trek: Discovery had even aired, Michelle had the idea to do a spin-off for her character, Philippa Georgiou.
She broke new ground as one of the first two women on screen in the pilot to usher in a new age of Trek, and now, six years later, Star Trek: Section 31 finally arrives on the heels of her latest groundbreaking win.
Everyone on Team Trek couldn’t be more thrilled to have our legendary friend return home to us as we expand our storytelling into new and uncharted corners of the Trekverse. Long live Emperor Georgiou; long live Michelle Yeoh!

Craig Sweeny of Star Trek: Discovery and Limitless returns for Section 31. The new Star Trek series has Olatunde Osunsanmi also returning at the helm. They are also credited as executive producers along with Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Yeoh. The series is produced in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
