Latest development confirms Showtime is on track for a Dexter prequel series showcasing the origins of the serial killer with a code. Fangoria writes about the Wall Street Journal’s report that the development is also supported by the plans of Paramount+ with Showtime after the merger.

Along with developing and expanding the world of Dexter Morgan are their plans for another strong title for Showtime which is Billions. As both are prized series under the network, the company means to explore and maximize the IPs.

This confirms our previous article about a possible development on the origins of the man with the dark passenger.

The announcement for the newest series in development goes back to where Blood-Spatter Specialist Morgan began. The Official information is below:

Dexter: Origins will dramatize young Dexter Morgan at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. Set in the Miami that was a hotbed of real serial killers of his time, the show will begin as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original Dexter. And, of course, the show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.

From the description, it appears that the production will have a new set of younger actors to portray the familiar roles.

The new prequel series will show the first years Morgan came to terms with his dark passenger. Significantly, his teacher of the code, who is also his adoptive father, Harry, is very much alive in this series.

Could there be more details that they will show about Harry’s death? Considering that in the original run of the series, he is Morgan’s conscience ghost, it meant that the adopted son carried a bit of guilt towards his adoptive father’s death. This is evident as in the latest series New Blood, that psychological existence became Deb.

Showtime will not only produce the new prequel series but other series of the franchise as well. Many fans will be happy to know that they are keen on developing one for John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer.

I, for one, am looking forward to this, but I also hope that Lithgow comes back for it. His performance of the character Arthur Mitchell in the series won him the 2010 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

While this will present a great potential for the network,  Lithgow will be a tough act to follow if they will cast a different actor. Considering that this will also be a prequel for the dark passenger’s nemesis, they will need a younger actor.

That is unless they go the ‘de-ageing’ route. Also, there is the condition of whether the actor’s own schedule will permit it.

Another series that is in development is a version of New Blood. The new version is said to:

explore the kinds of themes and scenarios seen in the original series (Dexter: New Blood) on SHOWTIME but through a new lens.

Could they be developing the New Blood series with a different perspective? If so, then whose perspective are they going to play up? There is the possibility that they are doing it from Harrison’s point of view.

Prior to reappearing in his father’s life in the series, Harrison struggled in his younger years, seeing his adoptive mother go through cancer. Also, the series could show parallelisms between his tendencies to that of Morgan.

At the same time, it could give the slight differences that led to the last moments he shared with his father.

Franchise creator Clyde Phillips talks about the exciting developments in, what people are now referring to as the Dexter-verse:

I couldn’t be more excited about exploring and expanding the universe of Dexter. It’s a privilege to contemplate going even deeper with these complex and iconic characters – and the stories, themes and possibilities they inspire. I’m thrilled that Chris and my friends at Showtime want me to help them grow this truly unique and amazingly successful franchise.
