The PS5 was revealed at Sony’s event, but there was no official announcement on its price. Will it be more expensive than the new Xbox?
Last night’s PS5 event was a pretty big deal because it was the moment they announced their new video game console.
Many of us have been using our PS4s for quite a few years now, and after Microsoft announced their new Xbox, it was only a matter of time before Sony followed suit.
Last night was that night, and it was a pretty impressive event.
The biggest moment of the night was obviously when they revealed the actual machine, and what a machine it is.
When I first saw it, I thought it looked a bit ugly.
But, over time I’ve come to really like the design.
It’s definitely more appealing than the boxy new Xbox Series X, and it looks like an alien spaceship.
It actually looks like a bit of alien tech which Sony might have discovered by accident and are now selling to us as video game consoles.
I really like the futuristic look, but I do wonder whether it might end up ageing quite poorly.

However, it’s not what on the outside that counts.
What really matters are the internals, the games and, of course, the price.
When Sony released the PS3, they made the mistake of making it way too expensive and people didn’t buy it.
That game the Xbox 360 a huge market share because people just bought the cheaper machine.
When it comes to consoles, price is paramount.
The majority of people don’t care that much about which is the most powerful machine.
They care about two things: the price and which games they can play on it.
Let’s face it, if people cared about power, they’d just build their own gaming PCs, which a lot of people do.
Anyway, there have been rumours that this new PS5 could end up costing just shy of £600.
This was revealed after recent supposed Amazon Store listing, but I really think this could be too pricey for people.

There’s also the fact that Sony revealed they will be making two PS5s.
One will come with a 4K Blu-ray drive and the other will be a ‘Digital Edition’, meaning it’ll be digital-only.
This is a really interesting thing to do because it means people who live in areas with poor internet coverage will still be able to buy physical video game and 4K Blu-ray discs.
This is really important because a large second of PlayStation’s customers live in areas where the internet coverage is pretty terrible.
It also means they can offer two prices: a normal price (for the machine with the 4K Blu-ray drive) and a slightly discounted one (for the Digital Edition).
Honestly, the price difference should only end up being about $50, because that’s how much the optical drive would end up costing Sony.
It’s been rumoured that Xbox might do the same thing with their upcoming Xbox Series X.
The Xbox maker has already revealed the Xbox Series X, but a second, cheaper Xbox (codename Lockhart) has also been in the works.
This has been thinking that we could end up seeing the PS5 end up being sold for around $500 (perhaps $499), and then their digital edition would be available for $450.

I reckon that both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will be priced similarly this time around.
Xbox has also learnt a lot from their catastrophic Xbox One launch, which was an incredible disaster.
They’ve learnt that games do come first, and then price is also a huge factor.
Both machines are going to be powerhouses, so there’s no issue there.
What they could end up doing is boosting the prices of their subscription services and then make the money back there.
That would mean that they could end up getting their prices closer to the $400 mark.
Whatever ends up happening, both Sony and Microsoft have to be competitive with their prices.
This is going to be key in making these next machines a hit and big sellers come Christmas time, which will be a huge sales window for them.
