It’s been revealed that a new Little Mermaid movie is coming out, and it’s just been handed an R-rated rating for what’s been described as “violence and nudity”.
This movie is being distributed by a company called Grindstone Entertainment Group, and the Motion Picture Association (MPA) has seen an early cut of the film and opted to give it an R-rating.
So, this means that this won’t be your typical Little Mermaid movie. It sounds to me as though the film is going to be a lot closer to the original source material.
This won’t be your live-action Disney version of The Little Mermaid. This is going to be dark, violent and have quite a bit of nudity in it.
The Little Mermaid R-rated movie will be a horror film

It sounds like the movie might be something of a horror film, which, if you’ve read Danish author Hans Christian Andersen’s original fairy tale, would make a lot of sense.
It’s a dark tale and, spoilers, it doesn’t end very well. Disney definitely opted to shy away from some of the darker moments in the original tale.
Interestingly enough, this movie is slated to be released later this year, which is quite surprising given that this is the first we’re really hearing about this live-action version of The Little Mermaid.
The movie is directed by Leigh Scott, and it stars Lydia Helen, Mike Markoff and Jeff Denton.
Here’s the film’s official plot synopsis:
When Eric’s friend and mentor, Dr. Ashley, arrives on the island, Ashley uncovers the true identity of Aurora and the dangers of the hidden evil inside Eric’s dig site. Will Eric heed his friend’s advice, or will he be blinded by love and the power of the siren, allowing the world to fall to the forces of evil?
The movie will be released in the United States

The movie is being made by MSR Media International and Grindstone Entertainment Group is going to be distributing the film in the United States.
Grindstone is based in the US, and the company is a subsidiary of Lionsgate, which is a studio I’m sure you’re familiar with.
This all comes after other R-rated takes on classic Disney properties have been made and done really well. The most famous one is Winney The Pooh: Blood And Honey.
It was announced earlier this year that the movie is getting a sequel and a whole ‘Poohniverse’ series of movies. Yes, we’re basically going to get the cinematic universe of live-action R-rated adaptations of the characters from the Winne The Pooh stories.
We’re going to get movies involving the likes of Bambi, Tinkerbell, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Tigger, Piglet, The Mad Hatter and Sleeping Beauty.

Moreover, we’re also going to get to watch an R-rated and live-action version of Steamboat Willie.
Steamboat Willie, just in case you didn’t know, was the cartoon that Mikey Mouse originally came from – or at least, a very early version of the character.
The property went into the public domain earlier this year, and filmmakers didn’t wait too long before opting to use the character for a more violent and bloody property.
