Netflix is setting its heights very high. The streaming service/entertainment studio wants to release 80 original movies in 2018.
Netflix has already invaded most people’s living rooms. We stream content more than ever these days and Netflix is the Internet’s leading streaming service. However, what sets them apart from the rest is their original content which is arguably of a higher standard than what their rivals have to offer, although they are catching up. However, Netflix is looking to leave their competitors behind by supposedly releasing 80 original movies in 2018.
According to Variety, Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, announced during an investors interview that they intent to release a whole range of films from, “anywhere from the million-dollar Sundance hit, all the way up to something on a much larger scale.” They already have Bright, which stars Will Smith and is directed by Suicide Squad’s David Ayer, which is set to release this December. Robert De Niro’s The Irishman is slated to release in early 2019 and has an estimated budget of over $100 million. They also received critical acclaim for their movie, Okja, which despite receiving a frosty reception at Cannes this year, proved to be a remarkable piece of work that you should all check out if you have the time.
Netflix is already well know of their original series such as Stranger Things, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and more recently David Fincher’s brilliant series, MINDHUNTER. However, this focus on movies is relatively new and some may argue started with Beast of No Nation, which starred Idris Elba who was nominated for both a BAFTA and a Golden Globe in the Best Actor categories. Netflix is looking to replicate that success with these 80 movies and hopefully go one further by actually winning the big awards.
“We just have to focus on creating content that our members can’t live without,” said Sarandos. “Whether or not one of our partners decides to produce for us or compete with us, that’s really a choice that they have to make based on their own business.”
