Morbius Sequel Reportedly In The Works With Jared Leto

A Morbius sequel might be coming with Jared Leto back, which would be the strangest decision for Sony Pictures to take, but then again, it is Sony we’re talking about. This new report comes courtesy of Everything Always’ YouTube channel (via Geekosity).

At the moment, Sony is working on two Spider-Man spinoff movies: Kraven The Hunter and Madame Web. These two movies have actually just been delayed by Sony. Does this mean anything? Not really. It just means that they are taking a bit more time with these movies, which is probably a good thing. As far as Morbius is concerned, we haven’t heard anything official from Sony about a sequel. However, we are now hearing rumours that they might be planning something behind-the-scenes.

So, if we’re going to take Everything Always’ report at face value, it does seem as though Sony and Jared Leto are talking about making a Morbius sequel. The issue I have with this news is that the first movie performed so badly at the box office. It really bombed. And, then there was the film’s reception on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes. The film only had a 15% rating on the site and just a 71% Audience score. If you’re to look at its box office takings, the story gets worse. The movie only managed to make $163 million at the worldwide box office from a $75 million budget.

This is a huge failure for the movie, and I’m struggling to think how anyone inside Sony Pictures could convince the executives that it would be a good idea to make a sequel to Morbius. While watching the movie, I genuinely thought that it was one of the worst comic book movies I’d seen in a while.

I have heard people suggest that Sony Pictures is looking at the bigger picture here. They aren’t looking at Morbius’ box office takings, but they are looking at the shared universe they can create and get people excited about. I struggle to see the economic sense in that because I genuinely feel as though there would be very little interest in a second Jared Leto-led Morbius movie. Perhaps Leto’s pull in Hollywood is even stronger than we thought it was. Somehow, I doubt that.

We’re just going to have to wait and see what ends up happening with this rumoured sequel. Again, I personally doubt it will ever see the light of day. However, stranger things have happened, and who knows, Sony might end up being in a really good place after releasing Kraven The Hunter and the Madame Web movies. However, for some reason, I doubt that will be the case. Sony Pictures has an incredible ability to mess things up when it comes to its superhero movies, apart from the ones they made in tandem with Marvel Studios and with Kevin Feige producing. There is one hope, and that’s that Feige is producing the Madame Web movie.
