There is a rumour making the rounds suggesting that Michael B. Jordan could be returning as Killmonger in Black Panther 2.
Now, I don’t know whether there is any validity to these rumours.
However, I did want to address whether it would be a good idea to bring the character back into the MCU or not.
First off, the rumour seems to have originated from Giant Freakin Robot.
They revealed that “one of our trusted and proven inside sources, we’ve uncovered one of those surprises. Michael B. Jordan will be in Black Panther 2 as Killmonger.”
Now, I’m sure that they got a tip that this could happen.
However, I suppose the question I want to answer isn’t so much ‘could’ he return to the Black Panther franchise, but more ‘should’ he return.
Honestly, I think that bringing back Killmonger would be a huge mistake.
It would completely undercut the impact his death had in the first movie.
Killmonger – as played by Michael B. Jordan – I think will go down as one of the best villains in MCU history.
The reason he was so effective was due to the fact that many people watching the movie could understand and sympathise with his outlook on Wakanda.
I’m pretty sure that there were many people watching the movie who agreed with Killmonger’s take on Wakanda’s isolationism.
Killmonger was a villain you could actually side with.

His return to the MCU would also undercut that brilliant scene at the end of the first movie.
The scene in question is when Killmonger and T’Challa sit and talk whilst watching the sunrise.
Killmonger then delivers that incredible monologue in which he says:
Bury me in the ocean, with my ancestors that jumped from the ships, because they knew death was better than bondage.
He then dies next to T’Challa and the scene really resonated with me and I think with audiences all over the world.
Bringing him back would undo all of that and I think that it would be detrimental to the film, the character, the actor, the MCU and also Chadwick Boseman.
It was revealed by Ryan Coogler that Boseman was instrumental in coming up with Killmonger’s final words.

Coogler said (via The Independent):
In early drafts of the script, Eric Killmonger’s character would ask T’Challa to be buried in Wakanda. Chad challenged that and asked, ‘What if Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?’
I also think that Michael B. Jordan might be slightly too busy right now to go to Atlanta and film scenes for Black Panther 2.
He’s got so much on his plate already that I think agreeing to return as Killmonger might just be a bit too much for the actor.
Anyway, they are just my thoughts about whether Jordan should and could return as Killmonger in Black Panther 2 or not.
