Marvel Studios has announced that Mia Goth will join the cast of the upcoming Blade movie, starring two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as the eponymous vampire hunter. The news comes after it was revealed that the movie’s release date had been pushed back slightly after the film lost its original director due to “creative differences” with Marvel Studios.

Mia Goth, known for her roles in films such as Suspiria and High Life, will portray the character of Rachel van Helsing, a skilled vampire hunter and a descendant of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing. This will be Goth’s first appearance in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, marking a significant career milestone for the actress.

The Blade movie, directed by Yann Demange, will introduce the character of Blade into the MCU, with Ali taking on the mantle of the half-vampire, half-human Marvel superhero. Blade, whose real name is Eric Brooks, has dedicated his life to eradicating vampires using his unique abilities, enhanced strength, and expert martial arts skills. The character was first introduced to Marvel Comics in 1973, created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan.

The film’s announcement generated considerable excitement among fans of the comic book character, as well as those who enjoyed Wesley Snipes’ portrayal of Blade in the trilogy of films released between 1998 and 2004. Snipes has since expressed his support for Ali’s casting and his enthusiasm for the character’s reintroduction into the MCU.

According to Deadline’s original report, the Blade movie has been in development since 2019, when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced Ali’s casting during the San Diego Comic-Con. The film’s production experienced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is now slated for release in October 2024. Blade is expected to be part of Marvel’s Phase 5, which also includes movies such as The Fantastic Four and the X-Men reboot.

While the Blade film’s plot remains tightly under wraps, fans are eager to see how the character will be integrated into the larger MCU. With vampires being a central theme in Blade’s story, the film has the potential to explore darker themes and horror elements, setting it apart from the more conventional superhero films in the MCU.

Mia Goth’s casting as Rachel van Helsing further expands the talented ensemble of actors in the film. Goth’s previous work in the psychological horror film Suspiria, directed by Luca Guadagnino, has been lauded for her captivating and intense performance. Goth’s experience in the horror genre is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Blade movie, contributing to the thrilling and suspenseful atmosphere that fans anticipate.

The Blade movie marks another important step for Marvel Studios in increasing the diversity and representation of its characters and actors. Mahershala Ali, who will be the first Muslim actor to lead a Marvel film, has already broken barriers in Hollywood with his award-winning performances in Moonlight and Green Book. The addition of Mia Goth as a strong female lead further demonstrates Marvel’s commitment to creating a more inclusive cinematic universe.

As the production of Blade continues, fans are eagerly awaiting further casting announcements and plot details. Marvel Studios’ track record of producing successful and captivating films has set the bar high, and the anticipation surrounding Blade is no exception. With the talented cast and crew involved in the project, the Blade movie is shaping up to be another exciting addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Blade, starring Mahershala Ali and Mia Goth, is set to hit theatres in October 2024.
