Melissa Benoist Wants To Return As Supergirl

Melissa Benoist wants to return as Supergirl in the upcoming season of Superman & Lois, at least, according to one of the stars of the show. This was revealed by Superman & Lois star, Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch during an appearance at the Fan Expo Canada (via Brief Take). There are many fans of the show and Supergirl that would love to see Melissa return as the iconic DC Comics superhero.

The CW’s DC Comics shows have been struggling of late. It was actually revealed not too long ago that The CW network is going to ditch all future DC Comics projects. Basically, since the network was acquired by the Nexstar Media Group, they are no longer going to make DC Comics shows. They are going to make procedural dramas and unscripted shows to try and appeal to a slightly older audience, which interesting enough, The CW already has.

It was revealed that The Flash Season 9 would be the show’s final season. It’s also going to be a much short season than fans are used to. It’s going to be 13 episodes long as opposed to the 22 episodes fans have been used to watching per season. Superman & Lois Season 3 is probably going to be the show’s final season. That hasn’t been announced officially yet, but The CW is ditching all of its DC content, so they’re probably going to end the show with Season 3.

So, at this year’s Fan Expo in Canada, Superman & Lois stars, Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth “Bitsie” Tulloch were there, and they had some things to say about Melissa potentially returning as Supergirl in their CW series. During a Q&A with fans, they were asked about rumours of an appearance from Benoist’s Supergirl. Hoechlin offered praise for his on-screen cousin, and his co-star, Tulloch, had the following to say about the rumours:

We have not heard that rumour about her coming on the show. She has expressed interest to me in doing it, and I know that we would love to work with her again and Grant and everyone else. I just don’t know…ever since we started the show, COVID has been a reality which is why we haven’t done any of the crossovers or anything like that, so we just can’t speak to whether or not that’s feasible.

The Arrowverse is coming to an end, which is sad. It did give us years of enjoyment, and even though the final seasons of some of the DC shows on The CW haven’t been outstanding, they did give us some truly brilliant moments. I would also argue that they did really well whilst casting their main superheroes. Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), The Flash (Grant Gustin), Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) are all brilliant in their DC Comics roles.

It does seem as though there aren’t any plans at the moment to bring Melissa Benoist back as Supergirl in Superman & Lois, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is something they have been planning for quite some time. Superman & Lois is technically set outside the Arrowverse, but I’m sure that if they were to bring Supergirl into the series, they would want Melissa to play the character.
