Meg 2 Footage Shown At CinemaCon And It Was Bonkers

CinemaCon 2023 saw the debut of the trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, and the result was nothing short of bonkers. This time around, director Ben Wheatley (known for Free Fire and In the Earth) has taken the helm, and it appears he has not only doubled but tripled down on the film’s absurdity.

Warner Bros. unveiled the exclusive footage of Meg 2: The Trench at the event, showcasing a film that is sure to have audiences on the edge of their seats. The action begins in prehistoric times, where a massive T-Rex is shown hunting for fish on a beach, only to be chomped in two by an even larger megalodon. This sets the stage for what is about to unfold.

Fast forward to the present day, and the team from the first film, led by Jason Statham, embarks on a journey to the bottom of the ocean. There, they make a horrifying discovery: a trench that serves as a doorway to a slew of prehistoric creatures that have somehow survived extinction throughout millions of years.

This trench soon unleashes an onslaught of giant squids, megalodons, and a variety of other prehistoric reptiles upon modern society. The main threat, however, comes in the form of three megalodons who hunt together in a pack, led by the largest one they have ever encountered.

The supporting cast, which includes Sienna Guillory, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing, all get their share of monster action in the trailer. But it’s Statham who steals the show with the most outrageous and heroic moments, as he takes on megalodons one-on-one while riding giant waves and wielding a massive metallic spear atop a jet ski.

As the snippet suggests, the tone of Meg 2: The Trench has been dialled up to hilarious levels of campiness. The film doesn’t shy away from depicting innocent but dim-witted bystanders being devoured by megalodons and torn apart by giant squids. There’s also a heavier lean into sci-fi, with underwater mech suits being utilised in the trench scenes.

The film’s unique blend of elements from Jurassic Park and Piranha is sure to delight genre fans, and with Statham attempting to take down megalodons single-handedly, there’s a hint of Fast and Furious-style action thrown in for good measure. One thing is certain: Meg 2: The Trench feels like a much-needed upgrade in tone and style from its predecessor.
