It is possible that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who starred in HBO’s True Detective, could be siblings. The actors have been friends for many years now. Other than True Detective, the actors have also worked before on a movie called EdTV back in 1999 and in Surfer, Dude in 2008.
And now they’ll be starring together again in the Apple TV+ series titled Brother from Another Mother. The series was first announced back on March 14, 2023. But it was only recently that the title of the show was announced. The show will have ten half-hour episodes, and it features a fictionalised version of McConaughey and Harrelson living together with their families in McConaughey’s Texas home.
It’s an interesting premise for their new comedy series. Especially since the scripted series would feature their real-life friendship. Apparently, it turns out that there is a bit of reality to this. McConaughey said:
A series about our families that’s based on truth.

McConaughey has admitted to the podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa that he is wondering if he is actually related to Harrelson as his biological brother. He said his mother seems to have known Harrelson’s father:
In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.
It seems like they have unpacked something big with that info. Both of them try to figure out how their parents would have known each other.
We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce. Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.
It did get to a point where there would be this possibility that they were actual brothers. They are already talking about getting a DNA test, but that will also open another can of worms.
Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him? It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.

Regardless of whether they do a DNA test or not, their friendship has been strong for decades now. It’s possible that they would know by the time Brother from Another Mother starts if they are actually biological brothers.
But I doubt that would affect how they feel for each other. In any case, if it is true, then their bond could be even stronger. McConaughey told Kelly Ripa:
You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line. And that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.
Currently, Matthew McConaughey is lending his voice to the character of Elvis Presley in the animated Netflix series Agent Elvis, which he is also executive producing. He is also reported to be starring in a Yellowstone spinoff for Paramount.
Woody Harrelson, who is also an executive producer, will appear in the upcoming HBO TV series White House Plumbers on May 1, 2023. In addition to this, he will star alongside Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in the film Project Artemis.
Brother from Another Mother doesn’t have a release date as of yet.
