WARNING: Possible SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker in this article! You’ve been WARNED!
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker isn’t too far away now. Star Wars fans across the globe are starting to feel that tingle every time a new Star Wars movie is close to release.
This means that the rumours start hitting the Internet. In truth, the rumours started the minute The Last Jedi came out, but this is the time of year the rumours really start flying.,
One of the many things discussed ahead of the release of J.J. Abrams’ second Star Wars movie, and the third of this new trilogy, is who will former Doctor Who Matt Smith be playing in the film?
Many names have been thrown out there, and I’m going to go over them and come up with my own conclusion as to which character he’ll be playing based on what I’ve heard from relatively reliable sources in the industry.
Emperor Palpatine (a.k.a. Darth Sidious)
One of the biggest rumours out there was that Matt Smith was going to be playing a version of Palpatine in this movie. Possibly a reincarnation of the former Dark Lord.
However, this rumour was recently debunked by popular Star Wars fan site, MakingStarWars.net.
In a recent report, in which they claimed Rey and Palpatine would have a major battle, they wrote: “Matt Smith does not seem to be in the film as Palpatine.”
This doesn’t quite put a nail in that particular coffin, however, it is a widely accepted that Smith will not be playing Palpatine in the movie.
He’s Not In The Movie At All
Then there’s the rumour that Smith won’t actually appear in the movie at all, which would be sad if true.
This rumour came after he did an interview with the Radio Times here in the UK in which he was asked outright whether he was going to be in the movie.
“As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not,” he replied, which really got people talking on the web.
People suggested that it meant he’d be cut from the picture. Others suggested that he had never been cast in the first place.
All of this could turn out to be true, however, I reckon Smith is just doing what he’s been told to do by Disney and keep his involvement in the movie a secret.
This could be due to the fact that he might be playing a rather important character and one which might be a fan favourite.

He’s Playing General Hux’s Second In Command
I quite like this one. Smith would match the esthetic and I believe would look rather good alongside Domhnall Gleeson’s Hux.
He certainly has that Empirial swagger about him which would lend itself very well to the new Star Wars trilogy.

He’s Playing A Member Of The Knights Of Ren
This might be more plausible. He could end up being in the movie under some sort of mask as one of the Knights of Ren, which would be super cool.
It would be even more interesting if his character whips out a sonic screwdriver halfway through a fight with Rey and co in The Rise Of Skywalker.
The addition of the Knight Of Ren in this upcoming movie has had a lot of people very excited, myself included, yet I believe that Smith would be somewhat wasted as one of Kylo’s fellow Force users.
I’d rather seem him without a mask and perhaps as a more threatening character.
He’s Playing A Bounty Hunter
Star Wars has a very interesting history with Bounty Hunters. The first one that comes to mind is Boba Fett, who’s easily one of the most famous bounty hunters in Hollywood history.
However, there’s also IG 88, who’s very popular amongst die-hard Star Wars fans. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Abrams bring back the bounty hunters and have Smith play one of them.
Perhaps Kylo could enlist the help of these new bounty hunters to track down Rey and the rest of the Resistance.
It’s just an idea, but one which I like a lot.

He’s Playing A Stormtrooper
There have been a lot of famous actors turn up as Stormtrooper in these new Star Wars films. I bet we don’t know about all of them, but we did find out that Daniel Craig played one on the first of the new movies.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt Smith donned the iconic white suit for a day and was seen on set, which thus started all the rumours about him being in the movie.
