Marvel Studios has ended up getting its first-ever Oscar nomination for acting after Angela Bassett was nominated for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This news was announced yesterday as the Academy revealed its nominations for 2023’s Oscars.
Bassett played Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ramonda is, of course, T’Challa (played by the late Chadwick Boseman) and Shuri’s (played by Letitia Wright) mother. It has to be said that she does deliver a barnstorming performance in the movie.

She played the character in the first Black Panther movie also. However, she was given a lot more to do in the sequel, and her character arc in the movie is a pretty harrowing and difficult one. She’s mourning the loss of her son, and then also has to go through the stress of her only daughter and remaining child being abducted in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ended up with a grand total of five nominations for the 95th Academy Awards. It was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects.
Angela Bassett previously had a Best Actress nomination for her performance as Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It. However, one of the questions I have for you is, do you think it will come away with any wins on the night?
I know this sounds rather negative, but I don’t think the movie is going to come away with any awards on the night. I just think that the film faces far too stiff competition in the categories it’s been nominated in.
Will Black Panther 2 win any Oscars on the night?

The movie was directed and written by Ryan Coogler, and it’s a mini-miracle that the film was made in the first place after the tragic passing of the franchise’s main star, Chadwick Boseman. I would love to see the film come away from something from the night, but it’s going to go up against the likes of Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water, and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
However, I do think that it might end up winning the Oscar for Best Original Song. Rihanna really knocked it out of the park with her song for the movie.
The 95th Oscars take place on Sunday, March 12th. Are you ready for it?
