Mads Mikkelsen has called the claims that he’s up for the role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3, and thus replacing Johnny Depp, a “rumour”. He said this during a recent interview with IGN, and he also added that he’s waiting for Warner Bros. Pictures to call.
It was revealed a few days back that Mads Mikkelsen was being looked at for the role of Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts 3. That meant that he would be the man to replace Johnny Depp after he was asked to step down from the role by Warner Bros. Pictures.
That happened after Depp lost his libel case against The Sun in the UK courts. The news that Mads was up for the role came from Deadline (and Popcorned Planet) and honestly, I think he’s a much better fit for the role than Johnny Depp ever was.
Mads Mikkelsen hasn’t heard anything from Warner Bros. about the Grindelwald role in Fantastic Beasts 3

However, according to Mads Mikkelsen himself, he still hasn’t been approached by Warner Bros. Pictures for the role. Here’s what he had to say on the matter during an interview with IGN:
Oh, that is on the rumour basis as we speak. So I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.
Hopefully, Mads is just toying with us. However, it does sound as if he’s interested in the role if Warner Bros. still hasn’t reached out to him. I would find it very strange if they haven’t been talking to his agent about the role.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens regarding Mads Mikkelsen and the role of Grindelwald. That said, I really do hope he takes it because I think he’d be brilliant (no disrespect to Johnny Depp, of course).
