In a not-so-surprising turn of events, rumours have started circulating that a film adaptation of the popular video game Luigi’s Mansion is in the pipeline over at Illumination and Universal Pictures.
Nintendo and Illumination, following their successful partnership on The Super Mario Bros. Movie, are allegedly working on the project.

Reports suggest that Nintendo and Illumination are hard at work on various adaptations of classic Nintendo properties, including Luigi’s Mansion. The teams behind the critically acclaimed Super Mario Bros. Movie are supposedly looking to maximise their partnership by adapting more Nintendo classics for the big screen. The rumour originated from Daniel Richtman (via JoBlo), who has a track record for sharing accurate information about upcoming projects.
While the sequel to Super Mario Bros. Movie is a given after the original banked over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, dwarfing many casinos’ revenues, at the worldwide box office adaptations of Luigi’s Mansion, The Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong could be risky ventures, even for a brand as legendary as Nintendo.
Luigi’s Popularity

Although Luigi is a fan-favourite character, his popularity is arguably less than his brother Mario’s. The lanky plumber played a much smaller role than most characters in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. However, his contribution to the film was enjoyed by both kids and adults. This leaves fans and critics alike wondering whether Luigi can carry a movie of his own.
There is a good deal of optimism, given that Luigi’s Mansion has a dedicated fanbase, and some even place it among their top 5 games of all time.

The working relationship between Illumination and Nintendo has been fruitful, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie proving exceptionally successful for both companies. In an interview, Meledandri revealed that the companies are looking forward to working together in the future.

The plan is to create a ‘Mario cinematic universe’, with the Super Mario Bros. Movies serving as the ‘main event’ movies. The intention is to then release spinoff films involving some of the franchise’s other characters, such as Luigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Wario. This is where the idea of a Luigi’s Mansion movie comes into the mix.
An insider revealed to us that a Luigi’s Mansion film has recently been pitched to Nintendo by Illumination. The movie will be an animated version of the iconic Nintendo video game in which Luigi finds himself in a haunted mansion and has to capture ghosts using a hoover and a torch.

Although Nintendo and Illumination are tight-lipped about their future projects, the insider confirmed that the pitch for the Luigi’s Mansion movie went well. It’s certain that there will be a sequel to the main Super Mario Bros movie, but fans are holding their breath for the announcement of the Luigi’s Mansion movie, which we were told is a ‘high priority’ at Illumination.
While these rumours are yet to be officially confirmed by Nintendo or Illumination, they are certainly exciting for fans of the Luigi’s Mansion game and the wider Nintendo universe. The success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the potential of a Luigi’s Mansion movie could usher in a new era for Nintendo adaptations.
Whether or not Luigi can carry a movie of his own is a question that only time can answer, but given the success of his game series, there’s every reason to believe that a Luigi’s Mansion movie could be another box-office hit. For now, fans will have to wait for official confirmation from Nintendo and Illumination, but the future certainly looks promising for the Mario cinematic universe.
