The Super Marios Bros. Movie has been doing exceptionally well for Nintendo and Illumination at the box office. We’ve been informed that they want to work on a Luigi’s Mansion movie in the future.
It’s already been revealed that the new animated Mario movie has had an incredible opening weekend at the box office, and the film looks set to make well over $1 billion. Even though it still hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, I think everyone is expecting Nintendo and Illumination to make a The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.
It seems as though the two companies are planning on working together in this ‘Mario cinematic universe’ for quite some time. It’s already been confirmed that Illumination’s CEO, Chris Meledandri, has been added to Nintendo’s board, which is a massive step for the iconic video game company to take.
Moreover, during an interview with Screen Rant, Meledandri revealed that the two companies have an excellent working relationship, and they are looking forward to working together in the future. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
Nintendo and Illumination have had a really rewarding collaboration. Mr. Miyamoto and his colleagues have invited me to join the board of directors of Nintendo, and we’re working together into the future with me in that capacity. But it’s hard for us to talk about anything else at this time.
Luigi’s Mansion movie has been pitched to Nintendo

So, this is where the idea of a Luigi’s Mansion movie comes into the mix. An insider has informed us that they plan to make spinoff movies. This means that they are looking to make the Super Mario Bros. movies the ‘main event’ movies and then release spinoff films involving some of the franchise’s other characters, such as Luigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Wario, Kirby… The list is literally endless.
However, as far as our insider has heard, the movie that Illumination has just recently pitched to Nintendo is a Luigi’s Mansion film. Fans of the video games (I am one of them) will be getting very excited to hear that they are looking to make an animated version of the iconic Nintendo video games in which Mario’s brother, Luigi, finds himself in a haunted mansion and having to suck up ghosts using a hoover and a torch.
Here’s what the insider had to say on the matter:
There was a pitch [for a Luigi’s Mansion movie] that Illumination made to Nintendo. It went very well.
They continued:
Nintendo and Illumination are looking to expand this universe beyond the main Super Mario Bros movie. It’s certain that the second one is going to happen, but they are looking at other properties they could turn into movies. Luigi’s Mansion is high up on that list.
They then added that this project is a “high priority” for both Nintendo and Illumination, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. Here’s what they had to say on the matter:
The film [Luigi’s Mansion] is looking very likely. Everyone wants to do it. It’s just a story issue now. It’s classed as a ‘high priority’ for both Nintendo and Illumination.

This seems to indicate that Illumination is planning on tackling the Mario or Nintendo cinematic universe a bit like how they approach their other movies. For instance, their Despicable Me movies then spawned The Minions films. This resulted in a hugely successful and popular movie franchise.
The Despicable Me films are still the franchise’s main event movies, but we then also get to watch some terrific Minions films in between the movies involving both Gru and his little yellow helpers.
As for this Luigi’s Mansion movie, Nintendo still hasn’t officially given the green light. However, I expect it only to be a matter of time before they get working on it.
Moreover, Luigi’s voice actor, Charlie Day, revealed during an interview with ComicBook.com that he would love to do a Luigi’s Mansion movie after watching his son play the video game. Here’s what he had to say on the matter
Yeah, my son was just playing Luigi’s Mansion the other day on his Switch. Look, I’m thrilled to get the opportunity, I grew up playing Super Mario Brothers as did everyone I know so, we’ll see! It’s like anything else in life, I’ll go if I’m invited!
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available to watch in cinemas right now.
