New Lord Of The Rings Movies Are In Development

New Lords Of The Rings Movies Are In Development At Warner Bros

Warner Bros has made a deal to develop new The Lord of the Rings movies. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films are considered to be one of the greatest film series of all time. The original trilogy earned $2.991 billion worldwide, with a budget of $281 million. And The Hobbit trilogy was also close to matching that with $2.938 billion.

With that much success, many wondered what would be next. Not a lot of people were sure because J.R.R. Tolkien only made The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Everything else he wrote were short stories, poems and notes which were compiled after his death.

But still, Amazon Studios wanted to get into the action by developing the most expensive series to date with The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. The series is set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings. Even though the series has gotten some praise, it is not without problems since many fans have voiced their concerns.

Regardless, The Rings of Power was inspired by the work of Peter Jackson’s films, but it is not considered part of the same continuity. Amazon even got the composer of the original movies, Howard Shore, to make the theme music for the show. The series is currently filming its second season.

In a report from Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that they had already made a deal to develop multiple films based on the books. A division of Embracer Group, Freemode, who owns Middle-earth Enterprises, will be working with New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. New Line is known for producing Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings back in 2001 to 2003.

CEO of Freemode, Lee Guinchard said:

Following our recent acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, we’re thrilled to embark on this new collaborative journey with New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing the incomparable world of J.R.R. Tolkien back to the big screen in new and exciting ways. We understand how cherished these works are and working together with our partners at New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, we plan to honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have said about New Line Cinema:

took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ on the big screen … but for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored.

While this is exciting news, no director, writers or actors are signed to the projects. Regardless, Peter Jackson and his partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, have been updated on the projects. They have said that Warner Bros. and Embracer “have kept us in the loop every step of the way.” They continued:

We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.

Ever since WarnerMedia was bought by Discovery, they have been reorganising the company to be financially capable of sustaining itself. We’ve heard so many cancellations like Batgirl and Scooby! Holiday Haunt mid-production to use as tax-write downs. Not only that, but WBD has cancelled several movies and shows that were focused on streaming services like known shows like Raised by Wolves and Westworld.

Nevertheless, Warner Bros has been working on their new image by rebuilding the DC Universe with the new DC Studios with James Gunn and Peter Safran. Just recently, Warner has sold the rights to release Dead Boy Detectives to Netflix. WBD also made a deal with Roku and Tubi to distribute Westworld.

While there are still no details with new The Lord of the Rings projects, the new deal could put Warner Bros back on track or at least close to it. Considering if they are a success, that is. As the statement cites the unexplored scope of the classic literature, chances are the upcoming movies will not be a remake of the previous billion-dollar trilogies.
