Donald Glover, who played the role of Lando Calrissian, has revealed that the Star Wars series is still being developed at Lucasfilm. After we saw his portrayal in Solo: A Star Wars Story, many wondered when we would see the young version of Lando again.
A Lando series was announced back in December 2020, and since then, we have barely heard any progress about it. The last hint we had about the series was that Lucasfilm was waiting for Glover to free up his schedule.
At the time of the announcement, he was involved with making his own series Atlanta for FX. The character was initially played by Billy Dee Williams, who first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. He reprised the role twice in Return of the Jedi (1983) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

In a recent interview with GQ, Primetime Emmy Award-winning actor Donald Glover said that he’d like to play the character again. His words:
I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him. It just has to be the right, it just needs to be the right way to do it.
I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just gonna be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that l enjoy. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be.
Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with.
I mean we’re talking about it. That’s as much as I can say, you know, without [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down
Lucasfilm still has to make a Star Wars comeback to the big screen. However, in terms of their series lineup, Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau pretty much-resuscitated fan interest towards the franchise.
The last movies under Star Wars didn’t really delight devoted fans. There are those who even got frustrated with Solo: A Star Wars Story. That film practically halted every Star Wars film project lined up.
On the upside, people got to see younger versions of well-loved characters. For Lando Calrissian, Glover was able to capture the hearts of fans, old and new, in his portrayal.
It seems as though Glover took the advice of the original Lando himself, Billy Dee Williams, when it came to playing the role. Apparently, Glover asked Williams for some input as he prepared for the role back in 2018. Williams told him just to be charming. And charm, Glover did.

It’s great to hear that the project is still ongoing. The last time we heard about the series was that it was silently cancelled. Although in the beginning, there were hints about the possibility of a movie for Lando Calrissian. Then by 2020, Lucasfilm made the announcement that a series focusing on Han Solo’s friend was in development.
No other updates have been heard since. Until 2022 when it appeared that the production was actually waiting for Glover when Kennedy said:
You need to ask Donald. He’s the one that holds all the cards here.
Donald Glover has grown his accomplishments, not just as an actor but also as a producer, writer and director. He just released a series he created titled Swarm on Amazon Prime.
And he is currently working on a TV adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith based on the 2005 film which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. He is also set to reprise his role as Troy Barnes in Community: The Movie.
Given Disney’s cautious approach to their projects, including Marvel, it’s reasonable for Glover to delay the project. He said so himself that he wanted it to be the right thing. And perhaps, because of the experience that he has amassed in recent years, he’s likely to prefer having a strong involvement in how the story for Lando Calrissian would go.
Besides, he’s currently occupied with his other ventures. It’s our hope that after he wraps those up, we’ll see Lando make a comeback. What do you think of the Lando Star Wars series still being developed at Lucasfilm? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
