The trailer for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has just landed and there really is a lot to unpack in this incredible bit of Star Wars publicity, but especially when it comes to Kylo Ren and Rey.
Star Wars trailers are always worth watching and are pretty important moments in all pop culture and movie fans’ calendars.
So, the trailer dropped last night during Monday Night Football on ESPN, and there was a lot in there, but one of the things that stuck out the most for me was what was going on between Rey and Kylo Ren.
There are a lot of scenes of the two fighting one another, which is to be expected given how Star Wars: The Last Jedi finished.
However, there are also snippets from scenes in which it really does look like Rey and Kylo are working together, which is a bit of a surprise.
Reylo (Kylo Ren and Rey) seems to be a thing in The Rise Of Skywalker

There’s one moment in particular which takes place in a very white room – it looks a bit like it’s on Bespin – in which Kylo and Rey seem to be destroying something together, and Rey is holding what looks to be a dagger in her hand.
The odd thing about this scene is that Kylo Ren is wearing his helmet which seems to be as good as new in this scene. Could this actually be some sort of vision?
Or could Kylo have merely repaired his helmet? Snoke was the one to tell him to remove it in The Last Jedi, so maybe this could be in defiance of Snoke?
Han Solo also told him to take off the mask. Perhaps, him wearing the mask is just him having rediscovered himself, and the mask is part of him.
He could be going into battle and the mask is part of that.
Palpatine is as the heart of it all

There there’s Palpatine’s line in the trailer. “Long have I waited. And now, you’re coming together is your undoing,” he says. It seems to me that Palpatine is actually referring to both Rey and Kylo, who have come together in order to defeat Palpatine.
This would be an interesting twist in the Star Wars tale and many fans would be whooping and cheering if it were the case.
Back when Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out, people did think that Kylo could have been some sort of double agent, or have a redemption story arc, which is very Star Wars.
Kylo could end up being a lot like Vader in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and end up helping Rey in her quest to get rid of the Dark Side of the Force once and for all.
Palpatine seems to be the embodiment of that in this movie.
There are still many questions about how on Earth did Palpatine survive being chucked down that chute in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
Will Kylo and Rey actually end up together in The Rise Of Skywalker?

However, it’s not even clear how he will manifest himself in The Rise Of Skywalker. Will he actually be present, or will he be some sort of Sith version of a Force ghost?
A lot was said about his former mast, Darth Plagueis, having found a way to cheat death. Perhaps Palpatine managed to perfect the technique.
There are still so many questions, and that’s a good thing. I love the fact that these Star Wars trailers don’t show much and just leave us guessing.
There are also questions surrounding Rey’s entourage, namely C3P0 who seems to be about to sacrifice himself in the trailer for his friends.
It seems like it’ll be both a sad and a rather poignant moment for the droid because it’s the first time he really doesn’t seem to be afraid.
There seems to be more joy in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s trailer

There are also scenes in the trailer in which it seems like Finn, Po and even Lando Calrissian really seem to be enjoying themselves.
If it had one small criticism of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it’s that the characters never really had any fun. This criticism could also be aimed towards The Force Awakens.
It does look like they’ll be a few more scenes of genuine joy in The Rise Of Skywalker, which I believe will be needed because I reckon it’s going to be a rather dark movie for the most part.
As for Kylo Ren and Rey actually getting together in this movie. I really hope it doesn’t happen. I like the idea of the two of them coming together to defeat Palpatine.
However, I’m not so keen on seeing the two of them actually get together. It’s not needed, and it wouldn’t really make much sense given Kylo’s tendency for violence.
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker will be hitting UK cinemas on December 19th, 2019. Are you ready for it?
