We need to talk about John Wick Chapter 5! There’s been a lot of talk about a John Wick 5 after Chapter 4 was released in cinemas, and it has kind of blown audiences away. The movie is just brilliant, and it seems as though fans are desperate to see more from this universe.
We actually posted our review of the movie last week, and to cut a long review short, we loved it. I thought it was the best movie in the franchise (so far). It featured incredible action set pieces. However, it wasn’t just that they were gripping and exhilarating. They were, but that wasn’t the only reason why I loved this movie.
I actually thought that this was the most ambitious and inventive John Wick movie to date. They did some things in this film that I’ve never seen done on the big screen before. This all just got more even more anxious to see a fifth movie in the franchise. The question is, will it happen, and if so, when will it be released?
Is John Wick Chapter 5 going to happen?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is very much interested in making a fifth John Wick movie. They want to make as many John Wick movies with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski as they can.
This was revealed by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.
Making a fifth instalment in the John Wick movie franchise won’t be easy, especially since Keanu Reeves’ character seemingly died at the end of the fourth movie. Sorry, spoilers.
However, Lionsgate’s Drake told The Hollywood Reporter that a John Wick 5 is no longer out of the question. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways. We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee.
The thing about the fifth movie is that it seems as though Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski were pretty certain that the character was dead at the end of Chapter 4. However, the John Wick movies’ director, Chad Stahelski, had previously considered making the fourth and fifth films back to back, but the idea was scrapped once the ending of Chapter 4 was decided upon. Drake had this to say on the matter:
Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very protective about never screwing with the audience. So we certainly have our work cut out for us. … Keanu is so beloved and that character is so beloved; that’s not lost on him.
When could John Wick Chapter 5 be released?

So, if they do end up making a John Wick 5 movie, when could it be released? Well, that all depends on when they start shooting the film. Given the fact that Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski are looking to take a bit of a break from the franchise, it might be a while before we get to see a fifth movie in cinemas.
These films have tended to have two years in between releases, apart from John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. There was a four-year gap between those two films. However, that was more to do with the pandemic than anything else.
I do wonder whether we might end up having to wait another four years before we get to see another John Wick film. However, they have to hurry up because Keanu isn’t getting any younger, and these films take a lot out of him.
Could Keanu Reeves return in the fifth movie?

This all comes after the movie’s director, Chad Stahelski, revealed that he and Keanu Reeves are going to take a bit of a break from the John Wick franchise after having made the fourth film.
“We’re going to give John Wick a rest,” Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter.
He added that he’s sure John Wick studio Lionsgate “has a plan” for the future of John Wick, but he either doesn’t know what it is or doesn’t want to talk about it just yet. If John Wick: Chapter 4 does big numbers (which is it doing), Stahelski said he would sit down with Reeves, drink booze, and map out the next John Wick movie. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, ‘What do you think?’ We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.
Moreover, Keanu Reeves revealed in a recent interview that he would only do a John Wick Chapter 5 if Chad were to return to direct it. Basically, no Chad, no Keanu, and no Keanu, no John Wick 5.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, John Wick actor Keanu Reeves shared his condition as to what it would take for him to take on the role again for a fifth movie.
I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on never say never. I mean, I wouldn’t do a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski. We’d have to see what that looked like. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.

As for the future of the franchise, we shouldn’t really be worrying because there’s a lot of stuff coming out of this universe. We already have a spinoff show which is going to be released on Peacock later this year. That show is called The Continental, and it’ll take place in New York in the 1970s and will feature younger versions of Winston and Charon.
We also have the Ana De Armas-led spinoff movie, which is being referred to as Ballerina. That movie is slated to be released in cinemas in 2024, and it’ll feature a cameo from Keanu Reeves as John Wick. The film is also going to feature Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and the late Lance Reddick.
You can watch John Wick: Chapter 4 in cinemas right now.
