Coming to a cinema near you this March 24th, John Wick 4 has ended up with the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of the whole franchise. Keanu Reeves is back with more punches and bullets as he attempts to free himself from the organisation once again. It certainly will not be easy.
The franchise has taken on writers under its wing as John Wick creator Derek Kolstad relinquishes writer credits for Chapter 4 and the upcoming fifth instalment in the franchise. In an article from Collider last March 2021, the writer disclosed that the studio decided on getting other writers for the future of the franchise.
It was for the first and second movies that Kolstad wrote solo. In John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, he shared the film’s writing credit with Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams. For John Wick 4, Hatten returned to pen the movie, this time with Michael Finch.
Despite the decision, Kolstad remained optimistic about the future of the franchise.
…you look at that and you could be hurt, and I would say if I was 20 years ago I would have been, but seeing what the industry is and how things go, I just believe that you bless everything and hope it all the best, and to the players involved who are doing other things elsewhere. And yeah, it’s personal, so I’m never going to talk shit about John Wick. I want this thing to survive and thrive.

Currently registering 95% Certified Fresh at the Tomatometer, John Wick 4 is the highest-rated movie for the franchise ever since he received and lost Daisy that eventful week. We all know where that led to. Kolstad’s blessing certainly paved the way to expand the world he began.
As he has wished, the franchise is indeed thriving. Definitely, in position for an excellent performance at the box office, the fourth movie from the grief-stricken assassin is polishing his guns for the next instalment.
The movie, like the others before it, is directed by Chad Stahelski. His direction for the franchise showcases his eye for action. In fact, it was the first John Wick movie that was his directorial debut film. The fifth movie has yet to receive a green light from Lionsgate.
Previously, Chapters 4 and 5 were supposed to be shot simultaneously. However, the studio cancelled the production of the fifth movie, which was also supported by the director. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski said:
In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute. Wicks always, for some weird reason, always get the latest release date in Japan. It’s always like, three months later.
The director ruminates on what they could do to see if he and Reeves would make John Wick 5. He continued:
If it’s the same this time, we’ll do a Japanese tour and release the movie in September. Keanu and I will take the long trip to Tokyo, we’ll sit in the Imperial Hotel Scotch Bar and go, “What do you think?” We’ll have a couple 20-year-old whiskies and write some ideas on napkins. If those ideas stick, maybe we’ll make a movie.
As for Reeves, his idea of what it takes for John Wick 5 to happen is pretty direct. GamesRadar quoted the actor from an interview with Total Film, where he said:
You have to see how the audience responds to what we did. The only reason we’ve had a chance to make these movies is that people have liked what we have done. So I think we have to wait and see how the audience responds to it. Hopefully they’ll like it.

With the current standing of the movie from the critics’ point of view, John Wick 4 is the best movie yet. If anything, it will deliver at least what the growing population of fans has been expecting. And based on the trailer reception, everyone has only positive words to say about the franchise.
From the looks of things, the film will not have any shortage of engaging fight sequences and epic explosions. They are set to do so in multiple locations to boot! While it will not be a complex dramatic, sci-fi fantasy adventure that some audiences look for to get off their home couch and into cinemas, John Wick 4 is strong to where it counts.
To compare Rotten Tomatoes ratings, the first movie released in 2014 had 86% on the Tomatometer and an 81% audience score. John Wick 2 had 89% and 85%, while John Wick 3 got 89% and 86%. By these percentages, John Wick 4 only needs 87% to merit a green light for John Wick 5.
