It’s being reported that Disney is now working on a John Carter Of Mars reboot series for Disney Plus, which is actually quite interesting to me.
This was first reported by insider Daniel Richtman, and I’ve since been in contact with a source I trust close to Disney.
Richtman merely reported that Disney was working on a John Carter Of Mars reboot.
However, my source went on to add that that this is in the works at Disney and is actually being made for Disney Plus.
My source also added that it’s a series, not a movie.
This is something that I think is perfect for John Carter IP.
The movie, which was released back in 2012, did end up bombing at the box office.
However, there was actually quite a bit of promise there, and I didn’t think the movie was a bad as people remember it being.
It starred Taylor Kisch as John Carter and he was joined by the likes of Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy and Willem Dafoe.

Here’s what our source had to say on the matter:
Yes, I can confirm that John Carter is an IP Disney is looking to adapt into a series for D+ [Disney Plus].
The source then added:
As it stands, it won’t be connected to the Andrew Stanton movie. It’ll be a completely new retelling of the John Carter Of Mars story. It’ll be more an adaptation of the Barsoom tales.
This John Carter series will be an adaptation of the Barsoom tales

This is really interesting to me because the Barsoom tales is a bit like the precursor to the Star Wars movies.
Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote the books and I’m really looking forward to seeing what Disney does with the IP.

What’s the update? Is it still happening?
I think a tv series would be a big hit as the story is still relevant today (global warming, military conflicts, racial tensions, religious fanaticism, etc.). Disney’s biggest misstep with the property was its marketing. If they had focused on the century old legacy of the JC books and their impact on the sci-fi/superhero genres, it may have garnered more interest. Additionally, a reboot could solve the “But there’s no life on Mars” issue by adding time travel to the mix. Maybe Stanton was going to address that at the end of his trilogy with a Planet of the Apes moment (American astronaut uncovers the ruins of a JC statue). Finally, I hope to see elements of Gods of Mars brought to the small screen; especially, the blood-sucking Plant Men and the black-skinned First Born. Seeing as how the latter are considered the Master Race of Mars, their inclusion may finally put to rest the allegations of bigotry that are often hurled at ol’ ERB, a humble fella who firmly believed he was just another primate.
